I've been distracted from off-roading for many years but after having had an engine replaced due to near terminal flooding I became interested again.

I'm on my third Disco. Started with RTV trials in about 1998 in a 200TDi, then a 300TDi and for the last 7 years a TD5. Apart from the odd use as a tractor across a few fields the TD5 has mainly been used to go through deep flooding each spring. This spring may have been a bit too deep according to my local garage!

Now with a second hand engine, a raised air intake, a heavy duty bumper, and a steering guard, I'm ready to take this one seriously off-road.

Mud tyres are already on the wish list.

Hello and welcome to the madhouse,

Mud tyres only really compensate for poor driving, hence why I have them on my Disco but have General AT2's on my 90,

Recommend Steering guards and diff guards, Snorkel is only really worth it if your not sure how to wade properly,

I agree that most of the time all terrain tyres are the best choice and I've been driving on them for over 10 years. On wet sloshy and grass however it is clear the mud tyres can get out of ruts that ATs cannot. RTV trial courses deliberately force you through the same track as others and have lots of mud so in my experience the mud terrain tyres are a bonus. Not too aggressive but chunkier than all terrain.

I'll have a choice. I'm keeping my 18" General Grabber ATs but getting 16" BF Goodrich Mud.

I was with you on the snorkel until a couple of months ago. I've waded all of my Discos up to their wading depth keeping a good bow wave and no problems. This year I developed starting problems and although there is no proof the most likely cause was water sitting in the pipes from one wade or another and months later being sucked in to the engine. Very costly .

Just to be sure I have the snorkel.
