i have an issue.
well i dont, but lcbandit does

she appears to have a concerning leak of atf from between the transfer box and main box.
also of concern, is the amount of slop on the transfer box front output shaft, causing a bit of vibration.

so, what i'm after (well she is really) is,-

a replacement transfer box for a defender so the drive flange issue can be addressed on the bench, and-
information on the likely seals allowing dexron II to fall out the box and ease of changing them.

what would be even betterer, is a replacement main box and transfer box, and just swap the lot, then service the original boxes

was originally just gonna pm jim, but hey, why not open it up to all

Take transfer box off. Replace gearbox output seal and possibly collar if needed. Stick transfer box back on and replace front output bearing and/or output shaft. Sorted. Nae need to fanny around with new boxes

if you have a hand to take it off, as they can be awkward and heavyish.

atf if leaking from between the 22 boxes would be either a leak from gear box top and leaking down or rear g/box seal icv100000,which is also the same seal fitted as input seal to t/box, its best to remove seal collar from box ,but if you dont ensure you dont damage it , both front and rear outputs have some movement as shaft is only supported by a ball bearing (stc1130)at outer end and diff sun gears on inner, both outputs can be changed with box in situ, its worth dropping sump plate and checking intermediate gear for endfloat and nipping outer nut to remove if there is ,counter rotating both output flanges will give you an idea on diff wear ,ideally there should be no free play but theres usually some, much doesnt mean a much longer life

mainbox is chucking atf out from gasket next to lower mounting holes.
also of concern is the amount of wear in the transfer box input splines.

after removing both boxes from what looks like the bottom of the okyfanoke swamp, a jetwash will follow tomorrow and we'll see what can be salvaged.

opinions welcomed, it'll be a first for me opening one up

you need a new input gear and i would change main shaft but you would get some life from it

boxes cleaned, drained, filter removed (didn't know they had one, full of cak it was) mainbox output shaft collar removed after making some extenders for the bearing puller, gear selector yoke thing off,extension box off.
dinner time, more later.
