My trusty 90 has now sold and is to be collected this week and I will be sad to see it go, its been fabulous. But needs must and I am now seriously on the hunt for a Disco 2, manual with leather. I have up to maybe 5.5k so really shouldn't be too difficult you might think. I went to look at an 04 plate today, just MOT'd, plenty of underseal at the rear end and the owner told me it had required a patch and a bit of welding at the rear of the chassis. It looked lovely and drove great, a bit of what Id describe as loose throttle travel at the start but maybe they are all like that I don't know. but its a poor do when the chassis needs welding at 10 years old and doesn't bode well for long term ownership. Were the earlier Disco 2's any better or are they all as bad as each other? Am I going to find all the ones I look at in my price range will have had or be needing welding?

hi mate.
disco 2,s suffer badly from chassis rot. rear rails near petrol tank
just about anywhere same as old disco,s

had to replace mine after a year of having it rear rails where shot. made my own using 4mm steal, plasma cutter

Yep mine same, one patch done on a 2001. The rear part of chassis is horrible compared to rest of it. Having said that the patchvwas done 2 years ago and have had no more holes since and I check regular. Its the bit I cant get to near the fuel tank that concerns me tho as the rest has been well treated. Great vehicles otherwise...im consideting fuel rear chassis leg renewal later this year.

do they do quarter chassis like they do on defenders then? or any sort of repair section? I was hoping for a rot free example but maybe I'm expecting too much. I was really impressed with the drive, much more refined then my 300tdi Disco I used to have and the air suspension impressed me too.

I replace my rear chassis section last aug.last week i decided to clean chassis inside and out.i wire brushed the outer and was suprised at how good it was with lots of original paint intact. inside was jet washed and air lined.i painted neutrarust 661 on chassis outer.then a coat of omnicoat rust converter and primer.then 2 coats of underseal with waxoyl.inside the chassis with a long probe sprayed in rejel rustproofing cavity wax by dinitrol also has a rust converter in it. hope to get a couple more years from it.

Yes - there's rear quarters available. However the bad bits on my 2001 D2 TD5 was in front of that: Nearside between spring tower and trailing arm mount - a 3 foot section all told.

Loose throttle - my mate who runs a D1 had a go in mine and thought along similar lines - eugh! I guess you get used to it (I don't notice it anymore!) - throttle response is there once you've got some revs. I'm not talking about when the turbo comes on boost either. It must be a characteristic of the drive by wire electronics. (No throttle cable!)

rust wise i agree, but more stupid electrics/suspension issues to deal with on the p38,:p;);)
Disco has it's share of suspension issues and ACE, RF receivers etc. Keep a P38 interior dry and serviced and they seem to be OK.

true, but having owned both types, the D2 has less issue's,p38 is over complicated by far.;)

No real issues with mine, 2 local Disco's have had more trouble, guess it's down to luck. You OK?

aye maybe so,no not really, lung issue is still bad, they think it is a lung infection and pleurisy now.on meds but no change as yet.

Sorry to hear that mate, keep behind the buggers, they are just like garage mechs, guessing half the time:(

Just love when a Doc says I think............. Try this if not come back and we will try something else............... grasping at straws most of the time

I thought the fly by wire might have been to blame and as I say it picked up its skirts well when on the go. Im just wondering if the chassis were better on the earlier pre face lifts or anything like that and whetehr Im expecting too much to find one thats had and needs no welding in the price range Im looking at.

yes i think they are,one doc ordered a mri scan, another cancelled it,said he thinks it is an infection, take tabs and come back in 4/6 weeks for another x ray.surely doing a scan straight away would give the answer immediately, instead of me being in bloody agony.

steve, all D2's are chassis beware.mine was like a weetabix thats why i had it changed by a chap on here.;)

A full new chassis? Can I ask how much that cost?

it was not a brand new one,but one in exceptional condition which was professionally re furbed.I cannot tell you how much as that is between myself and the man who did the work.sorry, but if you pm me i will give you some details.
