Someone posted a tip on ere to clean behind the plastic sill covers which sit against the sill just in front of the rear wheels. I can't find the fred now so started this one - thanks whoever you were.

I took mine oft recently to clean behind them and was surprised at how much mud and clay/sand was there. I normally jet wash it after going oft road and always make sure the sills are clean. Also point the jet at the panel gaps but it seems this hidden area doesn't get flushed clean. It's still damp too which was a surprise after 4 days of constant sunshine and no rain during the day.

If you open the rear doors the plastic covers come oft when you undo 3 screws. One of them is a torx head screw. Others are cross head. You need to keep the plastic wall plug type thing the torx screw goes into, for refitting.

Freelaner had to have one of his sills plated because of rust between the plastic bit and sludge inside the sill.

Mine'll be getting a dose of oil from the gearbox and IRD when I've sorted the sodding release arm bearing.

While you're there check that plastic capping that runs full length along the seam that the Jack goes onto. I took mine off and found pretty much the same as you found. Lots of damp silt... I'll be leaving that plastic trim off.

And, if you're mad keen take the front guards off too. There will be a lot of dampness behind the front wheel/mudflap area. A through clean and several days of natural drying [do you get that in the UK?] and perhaps a coat of fisholine oil or similar.

It's not rust. The yellow/orange bits are yarwell and tixover quarry.

I took my sill plastics oft and put hammerite underbody seal with added waxoyl on them, then put the plastic back. Bit messy to do.

Not sure. It seems to dry over time to a sort of dry waxy finish to touch. It's not full waxoyl. There's a 5 content of waxoyl. If there's a betterer product to use then I would like to know about it.

To be honest in that area it's ok, won't get washed away as it's protected to
