Land Rover Defender Starting Problem

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I recently bought a 2004 Land Rover Defender 110 TD5 and I'm having problems starting it in the morning. It's done 120,000 miles.

If I turn on the ignition, wait for the glow plug light to go out and try to start it, it does not fire.

When I turn on the ignition I can hear what sounds like a pump running, coming from the rear of the vehicle, possibly the fuel pump? The pump runs for 30 seconds then stops. If I try to start the engine it does not fire. However, if I turn the ignition off and then on again and wait until the pump stops and do this several times then the engine fires and runs normally. The vehicle drives ok and will restart normally when warmed up.

I would be very grateful for any advice on what may be causing this problem.

Also, I am living in the Staines / Egham area in Surrey and would be grateful for any recommendations for Land Rover mechanics, either garages or individual enthusiasts who are willing to undertake repairs and servicing.

Regards to you all
Malcolm

:welcome2: to the asylum.

First of all, be a good chap and nip along to the Intro section and tell s a bit about yourself, as it's in the :rulez:

Then see if you are getting fuel to your injectors as it sounds as though you might have air in the system.

I trust that you have some spanners??

Sorry BB, I missed that bit ;)

Could always bin it and get a proper N/A injun, coz I doesn't have any problems wiv mine :D:D:D

Iitrc the pump runs for approx 10 secs then stops, if its running for 30 secs then maybe thats a good clue?

sounds like air in the fuel system, as by turning it on and allowing the pump to run, then repeating you are doing something similar to the purge procedure,
turn your ignition on, and whilst the pump is running stamp on the accelerator 6 times, the ecu will then take over and run the purge process,
leave it to do this and whilst its doing it the mil light on the dash will flash,
let it finish the complete cycle then start it, if it fires then you did have air in the system,
if you need to repeat this procedure regularly then you have air entering the fuel sytem somewhere, my bet would be injector washers and seals

:welcome2:

sounds like air leak in the system allowing fuel to run back into tank overnight, hence the need to prime it all back up again.
Not an expert on these new uns but have read about similar probs before and always seemed to be air getting into the system.
Good luck and welcome!
Oh as stated earlier the N/A motor, nice and simples :)

Had the same problem on a Focarse, bummer to start but ran like a dream, changed injectors as they were shot, but never got to the real problem of air in the system, so traded it in and got a new one!!
Sorry it doesn't help!

Yeah, I've got one lying on my driveway he can use. Only smokes slightly and has run away once. Probably just needs a bloody good thump with a hammer I expect.
