yeah can do but remember to fit an isolator, just ask deasy why

I have a nice big isolator ready to go in, ordered a new winch bumper which will be here monday!!

Me and my mate was having a little debate on where you wire the winch from, he says alt i say battery..

I can't understand why he would say alt... he says so it doesnt flatten the battery. Has anyone done this?

Ive got 4 meter of 40mm2 cable for the power from batter to iso switch then iso to winch.

Im more than likely going to earth to a nice clean part on the chassis as i already paid
£30 for the 3metre cable for the power..

Thats what i plan to do.

A friend says wire it to the alt, Im not going to do that but what are the pros and cons of doing that?

A winch can easily draw as many amps as it needs, some over 300+ Unless you have an alternator that can supply that current it won't work well.

At least with it connected to a battery there's a chance you could still use the winch even if your engine is dead, no chance if it's on the alternator!

Having said that, it's still good practice to run the engine when winching to take the load off the battery, especially if it's the only one in the vehicle.

My Defender alternator is currently 45A rated .. My 100A Disco one may soon be substituted ..

if its how I think you mean, then no as the current will be too high

I have the big cable going to the winch power ect, it currently has 2 ways of using the winch. i put the plug in jack on the front of the 90, so that i can just plug that in, that has 3 wires coming out, red black and white i believe, so i understand that to:

On the plug in cable

red = power in (as it goes to the 12v feed on the motor)
White = one way
black = other way.

so my switch to go inside the cab has 3 pins in it also, I was going to take 1 to the white, 1 to the black and my question is where should i take the 12v feed from?

The battery as its a shorter run or the winch motor where the battery goes to anyway?

The wireless thing has 5 cables, i take these as 1 is power in 2 is ariel/receiver 3 is earth 4 is forward 5 is backwards..

I used a spare wander lead to run a feed to the inside of the cab on my disco , it runs up the a pillar and to a switch and isolator mounted to the sunroof panel on the disco, my thinking was that when I'm outside working the winch I don't want anyone else having control of the winch as I'm quite attached to my fingers. This way it's either plugged in to run from the internal switch or to run from the wander lead.

I also have a mains power isolator on the winch power cable. Any questions then ask away.

I just noticed you said you use a spare wander lead, I'm guessing thats what the plug in remote is called to, Ok basically the plug where my wander lead plugs into i have drilled and screwed that onto the front of my grill. It has 3 cables the go to 3 different places on my solenoids (as there were 2 tin can solenoids)

Ive just brought an albright equivilent which doesnt have as many connections.

Ive put it all together as the diagram showed me but what i wanted to know is:

Would a 3 way trigger work if i gave the switch a power source from the battery for the 12v feed, and then i jumped 1 cable into 1 of the wires behind the plug and the other into the other, so then the switch inside the cab would spool the winch in or out without moving..

my set up is 12v+ to the green toggle switch, from there it is connected to the centre of the 2 way momentary (on-off-on) switch, so up gives me spool out and down gives me winch in the idea behind the big green switch is so that i have a safety cutout to the solenoid if the momentary(rocker) switch packs up, it gives me a visual reminder that the switch is live and if **** starts flying about inside or god forbid i have a roll over then if its switched off there then it wont get hit accidentally and start winding the winch.

i have the albright solenoid on my winch and its just a case of using a multimeter to find the live one and then the other two are your directions.

Ok buddy thanks! I have a big isolator coming just after my battery so if any **** goes down ill reach for that on the front of my passenger seat box and disconnect any power to it.

Ok so the winch is on and it works!! :O

Just got to get the bottom earth nut tight as like a fool i welded the winch down and THEN realised there is an earth bolt underneath lol....

The plug in remote only works one way and i think thats the connections on the back of the plug needs soldering as it was a mess before, but the wireless remote works well.

My alternator belt (i think) squeals quite a lot when winching in tho...
