Has blown between a cylinder and a push rod hole,this would result in pressure. It's off with the head time.

they removed it for a tdi .

As above, very likely head gasket. Try removing the rocker cover and starting it up. If the cylinder is blowing into the pushrod gallery you will probably easily see the gas blowing up.

You will most likely be able to see where the gas has run across the gasket after you have removed the head. Also you can check for cracked pistons.

Can't run it very long on the floor though to give it a proper look over when running Not uncooled anyways

Should make a nice series transplant. About the same power as a 2.25 petrol, but with 30mpg.

Blackburn thank you for you video. Think you have just solved a problem for me. My 2.5TD sounds just like that lots of knocking and heavy breathing like yours.

off topic puttin split charge in for winch.
do i take power for winch off slave battery or starter battery

What split charger you got? Some have a sure start function on your main battery. But I would say use your slave.
