So got my Rangie back they regreased all my UJs (as my gun was rubbish).

They retimed my Diesel Pump, He said he got it from 90% to 70% but there was no more movement. He said he would have liked to get to 50%. "not enough adjustment in the pump mountings". I have a teeth type so there was no messing to be done.

He thought it would improve the hot start (need to remove device to check).

So, he said that to get it right it would need the cylinder head off??? And said, he thought probably wasn't worth it!! Is it a cylinder head off job?

Anyway, starts on the button!!! Seems more spritely, but could be imagining that!!

Only minor annoyance was he notice the middle exhaust box is broken!!!! GRRR!!!!!

Time for new timing chains, sprockets, guides and tensioners ? Cannot see why it needs the head off, perhaps I'm missing something :) Middle box is easy to do for a lady of your competence :):)

My exhaust went last year, as I intend to keep the car long term I fitted cat back stainless system that looks very much the same as an OEM, the French MOT testers are funny about no standard parts.

You can remove the timing case and do the chains by taking the sump off. It is not one of the easier jobs though. Rad and condenser Etc will need to be out for access. I did say if it's a long way out think about chains, seems you may have chains with a lot of toothache. If there is no more movement on pump slots they will surely need attending to, one breaking is not a good thought.

Was he moving it towards the engine? and I would try adjusting thhe chain for wear first to see if that cures it, via the tool on the cam and the feeler gauge as per manual. If that doesnt cure it sounds like the chain has stretched!!!!

Thanks guys, I think the chains defo have stretched. However, she seems a little sharper on the acceleration. But now starts without a lot of cranking.

Thanks, sounds tricky. I will talk that through with my new Land guy!

That is for cam timing it cannot alter pump position or take slack out of bottom chain. Slack between sprockets is taken up by tensioners. If bottom chain has stretched causing pump to be unsetable the excess length between engagement of sprockets cannot be adjusted out.

Cam and pump sprocket along with chains and tensioners, if needed, are easy to source, the crank sprocket is a bastard to get hold of, hope yours is good.

I understand what you are saying wammers hence why I stated afterwards that it could be the chains stretched, but for a few hours work id try and retime it to see if it would make any difference to the running of it, when I done mine ie new fuel pump and retimed it when it was taken off the modulation was running at 75% I then timed it correctly and adjusted cam and got the modulation to 50%, I was quite suprised at the difference of 25% of modulation. My fix was probably due to the fact the pump was mistimed before hand and a small amount of chain stretch prehaps.

Only real way to tell if the chains are stretched is to remove cover and inspect the piston on the tensioner to see how far it is out

She has already had that done, there is insufficient movement available on the pump to get modulation down below 70% therefore the lower chain must be very stretched or even on the point of breaking. Cam timing can always be adjusted but that has nothing to do with modulation. With what she now knows i would be thinking very seriously of getting the chains changed before one breaks and the valves make love to the pistons.

Oh dear........... I may have to rob a bank! :behindsofa:
