Land rover never made or supplied steel wheels for the P38 as far as i am aware. So am afraid you will have to find something on a suck it and see basis.

ive seen a few on steels but think sets are made up from single spare wheels supplied on early p38s,also think you can get a sort of wolf military pattern aswell

Non listed on Microcat anywhere for P38. Bearmach sell an after market 16 inch steel wheel 16" x 7" rim. P38 has always had alloy 16" or 18" 8J rims as far as i am aware. Can't see Land rover using a steel spare on a £40,000 plus car. Why you would want to fit steel wheels with the narrower tyres they would need i don't know.

true but ive actually had singles & sold them on, usually they come with a brand new unused tyre fitted aswell for some reason, they are only 16" & the tyre is not narrower, ive prob had a dozen over the years so not very common tbh but they are about most came out of 38s ive broke/sold years ago but tended to lurk in early 4.0 se models 95 m regs ,infact my first ex motorway police 1995 p38 had 1 in the wheel well:eek:

I think my 95 came with a 16" steel in the boot on a 7J rim although I'd have to pull it out and check.

My handbook quotes 16" or 18" with 8J rim (255 tyres) or 16" with 7J rim (235 tyres).

Fair enough but they do not seem to exist on Microcat for any year of P38. :)

My 96 has a steel spare.

All well and good but that is an emergency spare. A 16" x 7" rim fitted with a 235 x 70 x 16 tyre. Not designed for permanent running. If fitted at the time of an MOT the vehicle would fail. :)

Sorry, it's not an emergency spare designed for short term running, the rim & tyre size is the same as the alloy and it has the same tyre fitted as the alloys. Emergency spares are usually smaller section and the tyres are rated for 50mph max.

If it's an 8" rim fitted with a 255 x 65 x 16 tyre then it's ok. If it's a 7" rim fitted with a 235 x 70 x 16 tyre it's an emergency spare. It is illegal to run tyres of differing profiles on the same axle. Unless it is an emergency spare which MUST be changed ASAP. It is also illegal to run at more than 50 MPH with an emergency spare fitted to the car.

Just been out and checked, the standard LR alloys have the dimension 7J 16 cast into a rib, the steel wheel is stamped 7J 16 so they are the same dimensions.

No problem then. There are several 7 x 16 Alloy wheel types on Microcat but no steel wheels at all that i can see. Maybe they had the 7" wheels made to use up the stock of tyres they had for the Classics. They could not use Classic wheels because the PCD was changed. Your guess is as good as mine.

It's all a bit odd, the later owners manual gives the 16" alloy rims as 8J, but the 96MY rims I have are 7J. Maybe the earlier handbook gives the 7J rim size?

Think one poster said his early hand book gave either 7J or 8J with different tyre sizes. As i said they possibly used up old stock tyres on the early ones then moved onto the 255 x 65 x 16 on 8J rims for later cars. A 255 x 65 x 16 is too large for a 7J rim. Having said that according to the tyre chart i have 255 should only be fitted to 8.5 J rims. Have a look. Visual Tyre Size Calculator | Kouki Tech

The rims are actually fitted with 245 x 70 tyres. No idea what the correct size would be.

According to the tyre size calculator 255 x 65, 245 x 70 and 235 x 70 would all give near enough as does not matter the same rolling radius. Who knows why they did it, maybe as i said to use up stock tyres.

+1 but only seem to be on early 38s as I said previous for some strange reason most 95 models mainly 4.0 & derv had 1 in the boot but hse had a alloy:confused:

Yes, that's right. Both 16" and 18" 8J rims running 255 or 16" 7J with 235 in my handbook. Profiles in line, obviously.

I think Wammers is right and the steelies were just used as spares.
