Back to basics using a jump start lead from battery neg terminal , clip other end onto engine ( this ensures a good earth path)
Make sure handbrake is on and out of gear
Connect a alternator output size wire , that is long enough to go from solenoid actuator terminal to positive terminal at battery , to the solenoid actuator terminal ( this is the terminal other than the big battery cable terminal) Remove the wire that is already there temporarily.
It is irrelevant whether ign is on or off
You then have to press bare wire at end of the wire against the pos battery terminal , at this point the starter should engage and continue to turn the engine untill you pull the wire away from the pos terminal
If the starter does not do this the problem is starter motor end
If starter operates positively , then your problem is with the wiring from ign switch to the solenoid terminal .
Looking in Haynes ..the starter relay seems to have a direct out to earth E28 - might be worth checking
I swapped the starter relay with the hdc relay and, CLICK!!
Don't know what to try/replace now...........
The starter relay earth wire is connected into the base of the engine bay fuse box (underneath)...via a connector block C0576 this is 3rd connector from the right
This connector/wire might just need a push in...sorry I dont know where the other end of the earth wire locates to...haynes dunt explain and I dont have Rave.
so i guess you have your battery confirmed as ok ?
what i would do now is remove the earth and +ve connections and give them a good clean and make sure the connections are firm especially at the starters bolt and where the earth connects to the gearbox casting,
now you need to establish if its the ignition switch,or starter solenoid.
1, turn ignition off
2, pull off the small connector that goes to the starter solenoid ,
3, with a piece of wire,or a spanner, make a brief connection from the main starter connection bolt to the solenoid terminal,(carefull not to touch anything earthed) you should hear the solenoid pull in and the starter motor should turn the engine,(engine will not start ) do this several times to confirm reliability.
if the solenoid pulls in ,but fails to turn the engine , you have a problem with the contacts in the solenoid.
if the engine turns you need to check out the ignition switch.
It's a power distribution point it will connect to another circuit..
What engine and year is your motor?
