Looked through the Maff search and cant find an answer.
When I had the egr removed last w/e, I noticed the Maf plug was disconnected. I pointed it out to my mate who asked me if it had been running ok with it unplugged. I said yes and he said it was strange to do that. I plugged it back in and its run ok since.
Should it run the same regardless of whether its plugged or unplugged?

I believe but don't quote me, if the maf is working as it should you wouldn't notice on or off but if it's defective the car would run better disconnected but May use more fuel disconnected as the ecu will not be getting the correct signals for providing fuel delivery, so I'd put it on

That's my understanding as well. If disconnected the ECU runs on a default setting, which should be ok but like you say may use more fuel etc. If it runs worse when connected the maf needs replacing, if you haven't noticed a difference the maf is likely fine.

Thanks for the replies. It seems to be fine both ways, so I will leave well alone and see how it goes. I do know it was connected up to a few weeks ago when I had a new water pump fitted, and I'm assuming it was missed when reconnecting everything, or not clipped in properly.

If your car runs the same irrespective of whether the MAF is connected or not, the ECU is not getting any signals from the MAF.

The usual cause for this is that the MAF has died and needs replacing, but it can also happen with faulty wiring.

I buy the cheap MAF's off Ebay and they have always worked well for me, so for £30 why not try one?

PS Also, if you haven't already done, check the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor on the inlet manifold. These are prone to getting clogged up with tar-like crap. A quick clean with aerosol brake and clutch cleaner will have your TD5 running like new!!!
