Went off roading on Sunday and apppear to have broke my diff I think.

Basically when I was stuck and trying to get out my landy let out a loud clonk and I lost all drive to front wheels. Now when I drove it back if I went up to 30mph I would get what can only be described as a death wobble. The landy would vear from side to side very very badly and totally uncontrollable unless slowed down to under 30mph.

I jacked the front up today put it in gear and diff lock was on and I could spin each wheel individually with out the other one turning. If I span the n/s backwards it would make a bit of a grumble. I also wiggled the prop and it would move from 1oclock to about 3oclock.

Last but not least if I put it in gear with foot on the brake and let the clutch in and out a bit it makes a really loud banging noise coming from front axles.

So what do you think? Diff? Half shafts? Obviously I'm gonna strip it but I have no time or space ATM.
Any help appreciated

Well you have to pull the half shafts to get the diff out so i would go for the nearside first, you may be 'lucky' and find the CV has failed which might mean you don't have to pull the other shaft and diff

I've done this more times than you care to remember,

Jack one side up and spin the wheel, check if the prop shaft turns, Repeat on the other side,

If they both turn the prop put it in gear and try again, if you can turn one and the prop doesn't move it is ilkley its that shaft or cv joint, I'd gess cv,

I once pull a cv out in over 50 little bits,

I have broke my crown and pinion last Sunday off roading, i can turn my wheels and the prop turns but then hits the bits missing the teeth and stops turning the prop, well I hope its the crown ect and not the lsd unit.

And if it is your diff you don't need to remove the hunbs ect, just use a 1/2" or 13mm carnt remember which on the that hold the swivel on to the axle and pull it out (not all the way) and slide the diff out much faster than full hubs off stubs off ect.

Braking front cv joints and shafts happens to me quite offten, i carry a set if front shafts and cv joints in the back and can swap one in 30min with just some basic hand tools in the middle of a off road site. I'll find a pic

Pythia was at ellerton banks in ripon a few weeks ago, had only been there 30 min and bang goes a cv.

i did them checks you described and neither wheel would spin the prop. Probably halfshafts or cvs then.

Snapped shaft between the small gears in the middle of the diff Had the same symptoms on mine.

Stripped both sides apart at lunch. N/S is fine, O/S has has snapped the end off also looks like its twisted. Looks like im gunnahave to take the diff out and inspect that and get the rest of the shaft out

Well i have pulled the diff out and got remaining half shaft out! Didn't take long to do at all even though I had to partly rebuild it as I need it to roll to move it out the way for a few days. I reckon I could do a CV in 30 mins and with basic tools as well quite confidently.

Was really happy with condition of the diff think one of the many previous owners has rebuilt or replaced it as it had no wear what so ever. So jus a half shaft. Although Im bit confused as to buying a new one. They say right hand or left hand but were they looking from? Front Or from drivers seat? I presume the front? What's wrong with o/s and n/s!

Anyway he is the culprit!
