not too sure about the tank, its galvanised so dont think its ali. seems to pop up on google so think its probably just a more modern replacement pressed steel rather than welded.
thanks yes had a good weekend on it
yeah ive tried trouble is when heating it too add more rod it kept coming apart, so i think i need to clamp it somehow and as you say get more ali onto it to make it smoother and stronger.

not much progress this week but managed to get some time in after work tonight,
stripped all the bits of the bulkhead ready for some "surgery" tomorrow,
then made a start on the seatbox, its going to get two new sides as the old ones were covered in chequer plate not to my taste,
all being well, ill get some more done tomorrow.

Been busy today on the series 2, started by taking the angle grinder and wire wheel to the front panel, bulkhead and seatbox.
Removed all of the black paint leaving a bit of marine blue and mostly bare metal. cut the bottom section off leaving decent steel to weld to.
the old,
the new, had to do it in two sections because me folder is too narrow for a single run.
all welded in,
Then moved onto the bulkhead, i wasnt happy with what the PO had done with the repairs so going to redo them. it needs both top sections and a drivers footwell,
repair to the passenger side vent, burnt through when grinding so needs another wizz over (job for another day)
cut out the passenger side top panel ready for replacing,
i have placed the first order of parts and my eyes are constantly scanning Ebay for a roof (either truckcab or canvas) the latter seems very expensive and the truck cabs are always to far away.

made a bit of progress this evening, fitted the latches for the tailgate, removed the EGR valve on the engine and fitted a blanking plate, and fitted the seatbox side panels. going to pick a truck cab up for it saturday morning. then work on the bulkhead will resume now the parts and panels have arrived.

started the day off by taking the 90 to pick up a truck cab for the series,
then made a start on the bulkhead welding,
all the major welding is done just need to grind it down and make a cover where the slave cylinder pokes through,
top panels and footwell fitted

had another couple of hours in the garage today most of it cleaning up the aftermath of yesterdays progress,
ground down the welding and got some paint onto the bulkhead etched the top piece to try and prevent rust whilst progress is made on the rest of the truck and hammerited the bottom part,
whilst the paint was out i got a coat onto the already etched battery box,
and a shot of the egr blank, it had just been disconnected by the po so to make some more room under the already tight bonnet i fitted a proper blanking plate
trial fitted the cab back to see what i can come up with in regards to a filler panel. don't really want to blow £90 on an ebay one if i can come up with something myself
thats it for this weakend, got what i had planned to get done done still obviously lots of work, hopefully make some more progress in the week. clipping brake pipes starting to remove the gearbox to repair the bell housing.

got a few bits done today,
one of the doors needed some tlc so i dug out some spare sections from when i did my 90 and welded fitted them to the series,
then spent the rest of my time in the garage tearing apart my diffs, the previous owner has fitted a range rover diff the the rear but the front is still a series item, he supplied me with a diff which was stripped in todays investigations but both the supplied on and the one left from the 90 has knackered bearing so either way its going to be a diff rebuild.
on a lighter note this was finally given to me over a month after buying the vehicle,
from my research its an aeroparts tall bollard capstan winch, not a great deal of use with the 300 tdi, but im sure with a bit of ingenuity anything is possible

Right then I've had a slack couple of months on this, mostly due to laziness and been doing a few things on the 90.
but had two days on it got most of the wiring sorted and seems to be working, got the steering column back on, the glass back into the truck cab now the windows slide offered them into position.
then today i set about dropping the back axle to replace the diff pan and clean and paint it and the springs, stripped it all down only trouble was seized screws holding the brake drums on and then found this on the bottom of the axle
hmm leave as is, weld plate over or source another axle case ?
reason for needing diff pan nut and bolt used as filler plug may as well change it whilst its easy.
also got the pedal boxes stripped down ready to clean whilst doing the axle and remembered this
any ideas to whats is from, seems to be a dark art fitting servo on a series but there is some one on ebay selling the whole pedal assemblies, price is a bit steep though maybe its the only option, any ideas ?

Looks like the servo craddocks sell for a series to me, I put one on mine (didnt get a series pedal box though, had to mod one out a 110).

Yeah cheers Sam, seems to have the wrong end on to be for a series thinking disco perhaps, looking at the series 3 military servo with a lwb master cylinder to keep the single circuit brakes but need to look into converting to dual circuit

Ah yes I see now, my mistake I didnt notice the fork :doh: !
Looking at the fork it could well be a disco one (series one is pretty much same size, defender one is a lot deeper I think, got both so will check). Master cylinder is different on all of them though, the disco one has the reservoir on top held with push in fittings in the cylinder body

yeah no problem, what I'm thinking is buy something like this-
Land Rover Series 2 3 Brake servo and pedal box etc upgrade your brakes | eBay
and then fit-
Land Rover Series 3 LWB Brake Master Cylinder Single Line With Servo 569339 x1 | eBay
would that combination work ok keeping the standard series 2 single circuit brakes?
had another look at the axle case today gave the metal set patch a tap with the hammer and it popped right off leaving a hole underneath seems to have gone porous, looking for a replacement now thinking maybe a salisbury and modding the spring mounts to suit the 88" but as its got disco diffs would the ratios be different from the front (disco) to Rear (109" salisbury type) i guess they will if series salisbury is same ratio as the front.

I've got a single line master cylinder on mine which is standard s3 single circuit
yeah just looked that looks good, got someone following up a lead on the wereabouts of a cheap 109 so hopeing that will have one rather than paying the ebay prices (just me being tight
)

Hello people not updated for a while so heres a small one,
got some bits cleaned up ready for painting,
red oxide,
Front panel, underseat tool tray, and stripped nato hitch red oxided,
finally got hold of a truck cab filler strip,
got the doors lined up so i could bolt up the bulkhead fully,
set of three defender seats limits leg room with the truck cab but ill have to cope till i can find a ragtop at the right price,
Old axle repaired and cleaned with the parabolics primed and painted, awaiting a second coat but I'm picking up a salisbury axle saturday so ill have a play with that.
