Hi All,

Is there some kind soul out there that would have the knowledge and time to spare a few moments (well probably take you moments, took me three days so far and the only thing i've acheived is getting depressed!!) to show me how to remove the rear quarter panels on my 5 door disco?

I've made a start on the near side, removed all the fasteners i can find and released the mastic around the base of the window up to the roof line but that's it, it won't budge!!

Is there some trick i'm missing? If you're in the Staffs (Burntwood to be precise) area and would be able to assist it'd be appreciated, i need to replace the rear crossmember/boot floor etc etc etc but need to get the quarter's off to start!!

Can't help you with this sorry, but I'd really appreciate it if you could do a photographic how-to as I'll need to do mine next year!

As far as i can remember i think there is spot welds holding the quater panels on too as well as fastners

Hi All,
yep still struggling with this, although things would be easier with a heat gun by all accounts!!

My problem seems to be detaching the panel at the top, managed to release all the bottom and uprights and thought i'd released the top but it's reluctant to shift! (have undone the the two bolts and the two screws) Haven't tried again because i was getting some what annoyed and contemplating using the stubborn panel removal tool the i.e. plasma cutter!!

Cheers for the pointers so far and special thanks to RobP for keeping me from cracking up completely, seeing his rebuild has givem me hope!!


Aiming to try again when i can get hold of a heat gun

Just wondering if a hair dryer would have enough heat output? :eek:

You don't want to much heat... The seam sealer becomes really sticky and messy if you do... It just needs to be warm, I did do mine in the height of summer so it was warm to start with. Once you get a knife through just work it around. Have you removed all the bolts from the inside? There is little one on the wheel arch which has normally been pretty eroded. Don't forget the screws in the tail gate pillar either... Work back from the back seat door and you will need to slide it back slightly so that you don't bend the very rear section... You will probably find that there is a double amount of sealer along the top thats why that is a bit more tough.... just don't be to rough with her, she is an old girl and needs to be wooed before she'll give up the goods and lift her panels... :D
 
Ok i've tried using a hairdryer in the folrlorn hope of shifting this panel but it's still refusing to part company with the shell, i've tried hacking away at the sealant stuff but that's not getting me any further either!!

I'm at a loss on this, i've spent 5 days in total so far and not managed to get one panel off, took less time to strip the interior and remove the old boot floor!

Is there a solvent for this stuff?

What is the magic secret to getting these off? Beginning to think it'd be easier to source a couple of secondhand quarters and just cut the old ones off. I think i may have already damaged the one i'm attempting to get off :(

Will post a pic of the 'progress' so far and to anyone else contemplating removing the rear quarters, from my experience it rates as the most frustrating job you can do.

Which part is giving you trouble? After reading on google - it seems there are some countersunk screws holding the top part in. Which fixings have you removed so far?

Got the b***er off!

Big tip if you're doing this, cut through the painted over seam sealer at the top edge of the panel just below the roof line!! then it will come off, probably tells you that somewhere in the manual lol


Impresses me how much strength the seam sealer has!

Thanks to all that have helped, and hopefully the next side will be a little easier now :)
