TD4 How long should the diesel heater stay on for as we can hear a whirring sound even after a good hours driving?

Could it be the cooling fan, does this work almost all the time and continue after engine is turned off?

Depends how cold the ambient temperature is, it will run as much as its programmed to be necessary according to the ambient and engine temperatures.

The fan will work once the engine is off until the heater is back within safe temperature limits to be switched off.

Is the car getting up to temperature?
Sometimes the FBH stays of if the coolant doesn't get hot enough

The temp outside is around 8 degrees. The temp gauge is between normal to cold and half depending on how steep the hill we are going up is (tarmac lanes not off road).

Cheers for the comments

Check the engine temperature. The thermostat fail frequently on these engines, and it is about a 6 hour job to replace a £43 part.
