Hi All,

This is my first post so Hi to everyone :)

Basic question but how much oil do i need for an engine oil change on a 1986 Defender 90 2.5 litre engine? 4.5 ltrs is the norm but im just getting use to the defender set up as im helping a friend do his truck up.

I'm car savvy so i know my way around cars etc but im a newbee when i comes to Defenders.

Also is 5w 30 w semi synthetic oil the stuff for the job?

Thanks Guys

Chris

No and No. You'll need a heavier oil - 15/40 at least, and about 6 litres of it. Defenders/90s/110s have bigger sumps than normal cars, to cope with off roading angles.
If its the earlier 2.5 non turbo diesel, I'd go for even heavier oil. Halfords do a classic mineral oil, no more expensive that modern stuff, and it's what the engine was designed for. All of this is IMHO of course.

Hi,

Thanks both. We have brought the Halfords 15w 40 Mineral Oil for the change at the weekend.

An oil filter came with the truck. Its a UFI 2132702, do you know if this will fit? I cant seem to find the item online

If you can go for genuine parts,

Dont buy britpart,

And like others said, heavy oil is better !

Defender engines will benefit from premium products being used to service it,

Remember, whilst its all good and well to use the cheap stuff, if it could it would thank you for using the good stuff !

Britpart oil filters don't have a non return valve in them, every time the engine stops all the galleries empty back through it into the sump - this means on every restart it's got to fill the system back up.

If you switch off an engine with a Britpart and listen carefully down low you can hear the oil POUR back down.

Hi

What primium oil do you recommend as Opie oils dont have anything suitable. Millers which i use in my Celica which is good only start at 20w.

If it was my Defender i would put premium stuff in it.

Dont bother with Opie. Mineral oil is pretty low spec so there isnt much between different brands, the Halfords stuff should be fine (its made by Comma who are owned by Exxon). Costco do Chevron 15w40 in 20L barrels which works out nice and cheap or just go to a motor factors and get the equivilent CarLube oil.
