Hi all, Sorry this might be a stupid question, but what supports the half shaft side of the CV joint on my 83 110?
I'm trying to hunt down a vibration noise from the front axle.
I remember on my series 3 it had big roller bearings in the end of the swivel ball to support the axle. But I can't seem to find any info on what supports the half shaft on my 110. I've already replaced the bronze bearing in the stub axle. This weekend I'm swapping the diff out but I was going to take the swivel off complete from the axle instead of stripping it down again. Might as well do swivel seals while I'm there.
Just trying to get all the parts I might need beforehand.

Ah right. That makes sense. I'll just pop a new oil seal in there then.
Thanks James. I'll have pretty much re-built the whole axle by the time I'm done.
I fairly sure it's the diff now. There's not much left to make a noise that I haven't already replaced.

Have you taken the prop off to confirm its not the transfer box?

No haven't tried that Ginge,

I get the feeling it's the diff because the noise went away for a short while after doing a steep climb. Almost like after the pinion bearing got a good soaking it went quiet for a few minutes.

I'll try it with no prop as I have to take it off anyway. Is it ok to run in diff lock at speed? all be it with no prop.
Oh and I'm on an LT95 and associated transfer box.

you can run in diff lock at speed for as long as you want ,pinion bearing failure is noticeable on overrun first usually
