Hi I am just about to buy some new tyres for my 2003 TD5 Discovery at the moment i have goodyears on it 255 55 18 i am undecided to just fit new tyres or go the full new modulars and AT any help would be helpfull

bin the 18s go 16 mods then depending on what you want to use it for cooper stt or ggat or go for a wheel tyre combo from cradocks

Try tyres direct they do pretty good wheel deals for 4x4 before you buy ask yourself what you want the tyres for (off road or more road use)

i live in cumbria, 3yrs ago my old disco had 255 55 18's Michelin Lattitude on, got me anywhere i wanted to go no problem, the disco 2 will go most places with any tyre really, the one i have now has 255 65 16's, last winter it went every where and must say better with 16's, GENERAL GRABBER HTS 255/65/16 best of both worlds really with out a lot of road noise, but my choice! car doesn't really get used much, 5k a year at most, but it pulls a 3.5T ifor when needed,

I would say go for some a/t on 16s depends on budget if you are feeling flush go for some bf Goodrich or a cheaper option exactly same tyre tread insa rangers really good tyres and at 60-80 a corner really good value.

Because BFGoodrich are a decent brand and Insa's are just cheap remoulds.

Yes but they are very good remould as most of the people on here who go off roading have insa turbos as have I and never had a problem with them.

Yes 25 mile round trip everyday but I have a/t on when not going off road.

I fitted Cooper Discoverer ATRs on my D2 when I bought it and they were great tyres. Never got stuck in snow/ice (if you're driving sensibly of course), handles grassy fields and light mud surprisingly well, great on tarmac (very good in the wet), quiet, and economical and they were wearing very well. They couldn't handle gloppy or clay type mud though, as you'd expect. In summary, great value and recommended if you're no doing serious offroad stuff. Only 2 ply sidewalls too, so avoid rocky climbs.

I swapped them for BFT ATs. Noticably more tyre roar but not too intrusive, noticably thirstier (I reckon about 2mpg worse), noticably heavier (you wouldn't want these on your roofrack!) however, they haven't worn at all over 15k miles, and they've handled all sorts of terrain with ease. Its safe to say that if my D2 gets stuck now, its down to me not the tyres. Its what the professionals use when overlanding and I can see why. Yes they're expensive, but they deserve their reputation - if you can afford them, then go for it.

I'm fitting Pirelli Scorpion STs to my D1 shortly - they're a road bias tyre and are quiet, economical, great on tarmac and supposedly pretty good on grass and light mud too. A direct competitor to the ATRs I guess. However, my plan is to use these as the daily tyres, and fit a set of mods with more aggressive tyres for offroading. That way you get the best of both worlds - an option for you too perhaps?

BTW As you'll have seen, 16" tyres are much cheaper than 18s and there is more choice. You'll find the ride less harsh on 16s too, so unless you particularly want to keep the 18s, I'd recommend you go to 16s this time.

had Pirelli Scorpion STs on mine td5 255-55-18 had a lot of trouble with tramlining got to the point were I was thinking about selling it had general grabbers ATs put on its like a new car the only down side is very slightly noisier at motorway speeds 70 and above overall I am very happy with them I use the motor on normal roads for towing my van twin wheel and going onto sand with boat trailer

Insa special tracks for off road, yes. And yes I have a set for off road, but I have a decent set General Grabber's for road use/light off-road
