Hi , I am new to 4X4 and Land rovers. I want to have a Land rover for daily use to get to work but one I can use at the weekend off road. I have a small budget (£500 ish) and am prepared to do some work to get a jeep through a MOT. I am not sure if petrol or diesel is best or if it matters for off road use. Also what is the best Land rover to buy (taking my budget into account).

With that budget anything will need a LOT of work. If its a disco or landy expect welding, lots of welding. If its a freelander expect transmission issues and head gasket problems because it will almost certainly be a k series at that price. Either way it'll probably be cheaper to save more and buy something in better shape in the first place.

You would be looking for a discovery 300 for around that price but it will need work but don't buy a rust bucket make sure you check boot floor , outriggers , sills , wheel arches , bulkhead etc

Thanks - I thought my budget was a little low. What about diesel or petrol - is there an advantage of either

Diesel doesn't need spark plugs, so less chance of a misfire in inclement weather. Petrol's cheaper to buy than diesel but you may well use more of it.

Diff.
