Driving my 90 today when a fast annoying ticking was heard, turns out its the indicator relay running continuous. No lamps flashing unless indicator switch put on when all is normal. Its the same noise a relay makes when a bulb is out. Any ideas? going to drive me nuts.

Holey thread revival.... This is happening to me and I've just spent an hour trying to work out why...... Will try sticking the old relay back in - only reason I removed it was because the pin to the dash warning light was not giving a signal so indicators worked but the dash light didn't....

Hi just fixed this prob it was a faulty Hazard warning switch , check the back wires on it .

It must have had something to do with the very poorly fitted immobiliser that was hiding behind the dashboard! It was attached to all over the place including the ground of the fuel gauge causing it to float about.... Removed it all and the gauge appears to be working now and whats more the whole dash is brighter. Must have been the cause of the indicator warning light not working and maybe the Lucas part was less susceptible to the issue. Anyway the faulty flasher relay can go back tomorrow :D

Problem seems to be down to the new relays being solid state as a posed to analog.

The relay I took out of the 1994 defender was a genuine Landrover one and contained a mixture, the circuit board was all SMD components, transistors, resistors, capacitors etc plus 2 ICs a couple of electrolytic caps and the coil. I ended up ripping out a very poorly installed immobiliser which was buggering up the earth for the whole dashboard and once that was done the old one went back in and was working fine. The new one still ticked so I took it back whilst I was out and about this morning. The new one was a Lucas, strange fault that but now the immobiliser has gone the fuel gauge works properly too :D bonus!
