I know this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question but I'm at a bit of a loss so thought I'd put it out there to you guys and gals. It's a disco 200tdi and it seems to be losing what to me is a lot of oil. It's not burning it and the engines running sweet as a nut. Everything underneath is covered but where its coming from is totally beyond me. I'm going to take the sump off and redo the gasket but apart from this where else should I be looking?

And as its my daily vehicle I can't park it up and keep an eye on it. Also it doesn't seem to drip any oil when I've parked up which I found strange; so maybe only leaking when engines running?

Many thanks in advance.

As above good clean then cover the leaky area with baby talc, might help to highlight the leak?and if not at least the landy will smell nice :)

Will give it a good clean and see what it shows up. What are the most likely areas however? I know there are many but at least it'll help me when I'm lying under there

I did think that could be at fault but the oil is underneath the engine as well as being blown back all over the gear and transfer box. How many crank seals are there? I thought there was only the one in the belllhousing region or there abouts

Front and back. 1 behind the crank pulley and 1 behind the flywheel

Ah cheers dude, will keep an eye on it. Don't think its them however but hopefully it'll be easy enough to find and sort

Oil breather return thingy, goes into the head at the top, into the valves. One of my pipes had split by the jubilee clip, spurting black stuff all over.

Not sure but on my last service which was roughly beginning of this year I dropped the oil and there was only 3 litres came out . Filled it fully (6 litres) and all has been well. Topped it up since then, only recently in fact, cos the light came on and the turbo started sounding right dodgy, kind of like a band saw. I put 3 litres in and its been fine but I've got a feeling the lights going to be coming on again soon. It definitely is covered in oil under there, as for where its coming from I haven't a clue but in my opinion its losing an excessive amount

Saw that there is a return pipe for the oil that goes into the sump so ill need to have a good look at that tonight and check its not split

So you do not check your oil then, should be checked weekly as well as coolant. Only takes 2-3 minutes

Yes I do. But the dip stick doesn't show a thing even when there's oil in it, or if it does show anything I'm not confidant that its an accurate indication.

Of course I check my fluids weekly  I drive a landy

Probably stating the obvious, but you should start at the top and work your way down. Once it's out, it gets everywhere. Is your half-moon seal in place at the back of the head? These were the only seals I did not replace in my top end recently (cos I could not find the part number) and you've guessed it, they were both leaking. Only a little, but if one was missing, you would lose a lot of oil.
