My D2 has a mild grinding noise from the front right.
At about 30mph/1500 revs the noise is about 4 beats per second and gets louder when I turn to the right
At higher speeds - say 70 going down a hill - she is louder on _left_ turns and almost quiet on right ones (!!)

I jacked her up and tried to wobble both wheels - the left hand was firm in all directions but the right had a noticeable wobble but only from side to side (not top to bottom)

Recently the 3 Amigos have moved in - which I believe adds more credibility to a failing hub but...

Before I rush out and buy a new hub assembly and the torque wrench to put it back on right is there any other, hopefully cheaper, explanation I can investigate?

It does sound plausible

Wouldn't worry about the torque wrench. FT (fookin-tight) is good enough).

What do you mean by the "three amigoes moving in" About three weeks ago before going on holiday i had jacked up the front of the ninety and had movement top to bottom. I knew the front bearings were getting a bit worn out, so i tightened up the big hub nuts just to get rid of the slack whilst i was towing the caravan. Anyway, to my horror when going over 50 MPH and hitting a slight bump the steering started to shake violently and i had to slam the brakes on to stop it. The steering is incredibly light even without the caravan on.

Anyway this weekend i plan to do the wheel bearings and check the pre-load on the swivel pins but from what you said about "hub failure" is there something else i am missing?

At the same time as adjusting the wheel bearings i also put road tyres on instead of the INSA TURBO specials, something has made the steering really sensitive not sure what though

Top to bottom will be swivel bearings if it is anything like a Disco 1.
You can remove some shims and tighten it down if the bearing is not shot.
You have lost the pre-load on the swivel housing by the sounds of it!.

D2 axle is different than D1... it has wheel hubs which include the bearings, no adjustments are possible...and 3 amigos are a sign of hub failure

Looks like shim removal can only be done on a D1 im afraid.

I've put my bid in for a torque wrench
I know! I know! I don't really need it but Dr_Evil made me do it!

Next step is actually ordering the hub assembly itself

The local dealer wants £304.51 and a well known 4x4 supplier has quoted me £210 or thereabouts for a lookalike

I'm um'ing and ah'ing over to go genuine or not

The going rate for a non-LR front hub is approx £80 and is a VERY easy job to do yourself. Only 4 nuts and bolts to undo.

Oh....

From my research I thought I should be looking for one that had "Timken" stamped into the bearing - (I thought Britpart did) - te cheaper ones don't have this.

Or is this only if I plan to properly use my D2?
