I finally got around to replacing the oil in my diffs.

Before I started I had a quick check in the Haynes manual and on the forum - 1.6 litres each - so the 4.5 litre bottle should be just dandy.

The car was level and I got around 1.6 litres into the front diff as expected but I had to put 3 litres into the rear diff (!!)
Surely I'd need the car balanced on its nose to get 3 litres into a normal 1.6 litre diff?

Is it likely I have some sort of 'special' rear axle?

To my knowledge the diff is unchanged from new.

It looks very similar to the front diff - no 'extra' welds or anything.

I filled it to be level with the filler plug I can't see any pipes that would suggest a lower level.

I think, from the figures I've got written down for a defender, the 110 had a slightly larger capacity in the rear diff than the front. And also the capacities differ between rover and salisbury diffs

Bet that cost a bit.aint cheap that stuff.mine takes 1.6 each diff and about 2.5 litres ish in transfer box.if youve had a diff pan put on it the filler could be higher meaning more oil.

The last oil was in there for at least 5 years  so not too pricey in the end :)

There is no obvious 'addition' - welded on or not.

I was wondering if it was likely I had a defender or Salisbury rear axle.
Though I don't ever remember being told I was buying anything special.

I presume it should be matched with the front axle turn-for-turn?

How do I tell the different axles apart and how do I check they 'match'?

Cheers!

Edit: Ah - I need to get the axle numbers - I'll do that and report back - not today though - as lucky old me is going on holiday

Rear diff details seem to be:
HRC-1124 ROVER "24 10" "BG 00"
Front diff:
HRC-1124 ROVER "27 10" "BF 00" "2-4" "420-12"

Does this mean much?

I can't see any other markings on the diffs

Do these markings explain why I managed to get 3l of oil in the rear diff?

As JM said the level plug should be approx level with the bottom of the axle tubes, if you're on a bit of a side slope then the extra oil may have gone down the tube. Make sure you've got it level sideways (more important than front to back) and remove the level plug to check

Whilst I'm under there are there any points on the axle/diff I should be looking for other markings?

This is kinda why I was surprised.
I had the car level and did both diffs without moving the car in any way.
Still, photos will be taken today and posted later.

Cheers

Wahey! The long awaited pictures of my 3l diff
(also sporting its shiny brass filler plug)

Weird.

Shame there's nothing special about it.

Next time I drain/refill I'll measure it again and if I only get 2l in I'll definitely tell you all

Thanks all
