Righty ho... Apologies if this is a stupid question it's just I'm stuck under the landy at the moment attempting to replace my transfer box. I read that you can remove the rear propshaft at the brake drum without first removing it at the rear diff.?! Is this possible as there are two bolts that have completely rounded on the flange at the diff side.

Please any info welcome ASAP I'm using my phone to post and it doesn't allow me to search!!

Having just removed mine at the weekend I see no reason why not (mines a 90). The 4 bolts at the brake drum end are captive so you just need to remove the nuts and slide the propshaft away to clear the ends of the bolts, so far as I remember there is enough 'give' in the propshaft slider to allow this. I guess it would be a good idea to create some kind of temporary 'hanger' (a bit of rope?) to support the loose end of the prop shaft to stop it flapping around in the breeze or cracking your head open!

So is the slider not extended even a little? Mine was extended about 3-4 cm which would have been enough. Like James said, perhaps it needs gentle persuasion??

it may be that slide is siezed which if it is it needs freeing or new prop fitting or damage to diff and t/box can occur

where the short piece of prop meeets the long one sjould be at t/box end it allows prop to lengthen and shorten as axle moves,they can often sieze

Just in case James doesn't see this in time... The propshaft is in two pieces, one slides inside of the other, think of a trombone! The joint is normally nearest the gearbox, you'll easily see the join. This should slide in and out to allow for axle movement, it should have enough travel to allow it to be shortened enough to clear the bolts on the brake drum end.

i said it will damage either or both in time ,it needs sorting , nuts that are rounded can be split with a chisel across a flat they will unscrew easily then

It should push back if you get a lever between the flange and the handbrake drum, there is just enough movement to get it over the bolts, lots of WD40 may be your answer to help it slide or put some grease through the nipple in the side of the shaft which will help lubricate the slider

Don't quote me but I believe that hardy spicer is part of GKN. - Or the other way around. Either way they are the same.
