ok, so I have the normal rattles and noises when driving, just turn the radio up, I'll worry more when it goes bang and stops, but this one little thing is bugging me,
when driving its got ok acceleration, but once in 5th gear, maybe doing 80 ish, a hill approaches, if I stay in 5th, it'll go slower and slower, down to around 60, then as I reach brow of hill and start downward, pick up/go faster, if I try changing down to fourth at start of hill, it'll only hit 50mph, then you have to change up, but again, only to 60mph

any ideas on whats what?

However, upon reflection, if the volume control does not fix it, my guess would be a blocked fuel filter.

looking thru your posts .. it's an L-series diesel ( correct ? )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
( from .. Rover L-Series engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )
The L-series engine has been availabable in 3 specifications.
84 bhp (63 kW) Turbo/Non-intercooled (ceased production in 2000)
104 bhp (78 kW) Turbo/intercooled (Torque: 210 Nm at 2000 rpm.)
111 bhp (83 kW) Turbo/intercooled
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
am assuming they all produce max torque around 2000 rpm
i.e. that's the rpm where they will pull uphill the strongest ..
max horsepower might be at much higher rpm .. but won't have as much torque there

if it's geared similar to the td4 .. that's aprox. 50 mph in 5th gear

any idea which one be in your hippo ?

one more query ..
do you have a google map link of the hill your refering to ..
so maybe can get some idea of the gradient ..

getting more torque/bhp from the L-series lump:

there is a 'ron-box' available for it ..
somewhere on here :
Tuning-diesels for low cost diesel tuning.

also his site has a page on tuning the L-series :
lseries2

an LZ thread on same subject:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ok .. just re-read that wiki page ..
looks like the freelander got the second version
i.e. .. 104 bhp (78 kW) Turbo/intercooled (Torque: 210 Nm at 2000 rpm.) ..
*********************
maybe asking for a google map ref. no so great idea ..
but for comparison ..
my td4 .. in stock 112bhp mode .. it will be at 55/60 mph .. if i floor it when at the bottom of this hill
( see attached jpg ) when doing 45/50 mph in 5th gear
no idea how long the hill is ..
if i do the same with the tuning box switched 'on' max .. giving aprox. 140 bhp 'n added torque
at top of hill will be at 65/70 mph aprox. .. 'n faster if i drop it into 4th gear at the approach ..
td4 max bhp be at 4000rpm ..
peak / max torque be at 1750 rpm in 'stock' mode ..
( no idea re. max torque 'n rpm with the ronbox switched 'on' ..
( i think it occurs at slightly higher rpm ..
that's a rough idea ..
figures are aprox. as i only noted them once/twice in passing ..
( and one has to slow down at the top for a left hand notchy curve .. after the 2 lanes end )
these days i tend to dawdle up that hill at 50 mph .. ( 2k or so rpm in 5th )
knowing i ain't guzzling fuel 'n wearing down tyres .. as much :)
many thanks for that answer, a lot of it went over my head, but the fact that 50-55mph is classed as reasonable for hills makes me feel better, I never bought it for speed, and your picture looks similar to those Im hitting
