Got myself properly stuck in the mud this evening. I can confirm that the early P38s (or my '95 DT, at least) does not brake the spinning wheel across the axles. Without a mate to tow me out I'd have been stuffed, which got me thinking ...

Many off-roaders swear by Hi-Lift jacks and I can see why! As desperation sets in you can always winch yourself back where you started. However, as far as jacking is concerned, does it fit a P38? The bodywork seems to overhang all jacking points and the bumpers don't look like they can take it. Or am I missing something?

So, to my question: can you jack up a P38 with a Hi-Lift jack and if so, where do you attach it?

Other option is to put some sort of hand-winch in the back, just in case!

I would say no to a hi-lift jack unless you do some mods and fit metal winch bumpers and the like which mount on the chassis rails....

As you say the body overhangs all the structural points unfortunatly

Tow bar is designed to pull, not to lift...it would be considered bad practise...

Also, mine's a swan-neck so the tow-bar isn't suitable and even the tow-bar box section part is out of reach, I suspect.

Some sort of hand-winch would probably be best then. Not dependent on battery / power and can use round the garden / shed if required.

Pity. I've jacked myself sideways out of trouble before and a Hi-Lift would make the job pretty easy, I think.

Use the High Lift jack as a winch.

You could make something you could jack the Range Rover up

Tifor winch for pulling between vehicle anchor and tree (with protective strap) and an air jack to lift. I've used both in the past.

Or go on the biscuit tins forum and ask for advice there. Just make sure you've got asbestos undies on....

Blimey! That air jack looks, er, dynamic, no, exciting, no, bloody terrifying! What's it running off?

Bought a Tractel Tirfor TU16 off a well known auction site. Fantastic bit of kit. My little 7 year old son can winch the P38 on the flat / slight rise with one wheel stuck in a small depression.

Feel pretty confident it'll deal with what's required. Just need to test it properly now ...

Normally they run off of your exhaust fumes. Plug the hose on the zorst and run the engine. Dual zorst you might want a Y piece.

If you do a lot of mud-plugging why not fit locking diffs?

I personally wouldn't have lifted there...

The L322 uses a monocoque chassis and the lifting points are either the rear central sub frame rail, front central subframe rail, the 'Customer Jacking Points' infront/behind the wheel arches on the hard point...or a suspension to subframe hard point...

Lifting in that position would be folly, as you are lifting on the light weight monocoque...the load over the air bag would be spread, but still not ideal...

Obviously with the P38 and the Ladder Chassis, as long as you lift on the chassis rail you should be fine!
