I know car manufactures often compromise when it comes to putting parts in cars as they want economy, low emmisions, low cost and aim towards what the majority of people want such as low road noise etc.

So why did they put an EGR valve/system in the TD4 if you lot are all taking them out? I don't have the mod and will more than likely do it down the line at some point. I just cant understand why they put it in other than emissions? Is this the sole reason?

Ok, so makes it more comprehendable. Call me selfish but I'd rather kill a couple of trees in my life time than have to put up with lesser throttle response, muck to clean and lose power .

It was an ineffective morsel to throw to the environmentalists, as a result of some euro-emissions gobbledegook thought up by some grey faceless scrote/scribe in a grey office in Brussels/Strasbourg.

It didn't work very well on a new engine and even less well on a high mileage older one now.

Cleaning it, and the intake manifold, was the single dirtiest job I've ever had to do in 40+ years of DIY motor maintenance.

As you may perhaps just have deduced, I don't like the damn things.

I've cleaned a few dirty engine bays so we will see whether or not it is the dirtiest job I've ever done.

I quite like cleaning things when I know there will be benefits. Eg I cleaned my Mums kitchen lights the other day knowing full well they would give off a brigher light. She was made up. I had satisfaction. You could say being a car detailer gets you abit anal when it comes to cleaning...

Some may consider wearing gloves suited to a Freelander owner but I strongly suggest you do or you'll find cleaning your hands after cleaning the manifold and EGR valve more time consuming than the actual job.

I'm sure if all this so called emission junk was removed from manufacture all engines both petrol and diesel would be much more efficient, more powerfull and produce less polluting gasses.

I agree , this mod is worth doing , i have never seen gunk as extreme as this in any engine bay before I would describe it as a mixture of underseal/soot and grease , 10mm deep through out the intake manifold and the 4 ports of the engine !

The sticky gunk is caused by oil that comes out of the turbo compressor wheel oil seal. This oil passes through the pipe work as a fine mist. Once it gets to the egr valve the hot exhaust gasses partially ignite this oil mist causing this sooty residue.
