Thanks James, I think I'll have to take head off again, swap the follower, roller and guide, spring and valve...bugger.

Thing that's making me suspect that is that when I listen down the pushrod hole there's no sound other than the same gurgling from the others.

Well, off for a 150 mile drive tomorrow so will see if it gets worse...

put your finger on the offending tappet whilst it idles see if you can feel whiuch end valve or follower

Are the valve springs standard or performance ones for the cam?
With bike engines, we had to shim them to get the correct lift poundage otherwise they would click on the collet (and eventually spit them out). Do landrover springs need shimming.

Just ordered another head gasket and related bits so it might be a head-off job tomorrow evening....doesn't look like I'm gonna get much done on the other project as I've got my bus to get back on the road in the next month too. Got it moving for the first time in 18 months yesterday after freeing the brakes and clutch off...

Wanna buy it? Struggling to find somewhere to park the bloody thing and only other option is to scrap it which seems a shame when it runs ok.

Thanks James, I did try that but witht he screwdriver and it wasn't really conclusive I couldn't really feel anything...I'll try with my bare fingers next time...I'm a bit scaredy of it because I once managed to get bitten by a rocker and it was very sore!

I think they are, they came with the fancy head and are of the single type (instead of an innner and outer). They look quite beefy compared to pictures of others and certainly took a fair bit of force to compress them.

I had another go at it this afternoon. I decided to try the old rocker that I'd replaced...still the same. There's a video here of it running with the rocker cover off. The sound isn't great but you can hear the ticking. It sounds worse at a slower tickover but I had to up the idle speed when all the pipes were off the carb. ...

Is it just my imagination, or does the No 1 valve and spring appear to be bouncing?

They all look a bit weird due to the stroboscopic effect of the camera. I'm pretty sure #1 is ok it certainly sounds fine when I listen to it with a pipe #3 is the clacky one.

I wish I had access to a super slow-mo camer...I might try getting it to idle very slowly and see if that is more revealing.

no. 4 looked to be doing odd things to me, slower than the rest....
vid could do with being a bit longer, just got used to the noise and watching an yer move!

on a side note, what you asking for the bus? mate (who happens to live in hebden too) might be "persuaded" to buy it......

Anyway, my annoyance and embarrassment aside what might have caused this to happen.

There's plenty of oil getting to the cam by the looks of things and the cam looks and feels ok - at least I can't feel a lip on it.

I really hope I don't have to replace the cam....

**** in the oil!

A lot of the lube is through flowing down the holes, so it could easily have picked up some particles on it's way round!

What state are your rocker bearings in?

did you replace them before and where from since they are later followers ?

Aye bought them with the head, replaced guides, followers and rulers. Not done more than 11k. Rockerd are here than that. There is a slight burr on that tappet so maybe the roller was sticking? It's had new oil and filter twice since then and cleaned sump out. But there could always have been a bit of swath or other Shiite found its way in there

I think the colour was just the picture they all look similar in colour. There's no real scoring on the brass follower.

What would make it run dry? I'm not clear on how they get oiled. does it come from the cam or down the push rods?

There seems to be plenty of oil on the cam itself when I turn it on the starting handle but that might all get flung off when running...

The other rollers I pulled out all look good as new and the one I took out before I swapped the head (10k miles ago) were all perfect looking.

I'll fish the guide out tomorrow and have a look. I wonder if that might have not been in perfectly straight if the roller has been chattering in that and sticking.

The other rollers have a nice bright wear ring round both sides whereas the duff one is not as neat on one side and the chamfer is not as deep...

cam bearings are fed from oil gallery which will spread some but followers are fed from above,oil that runs down past push rods if the rest are fine it coould easily be just a poor part,brass follower has a hole that feeds oil onto guuide

Thanks James, that's what I thought. I checked all the oilways in the rocker's shaft etc and every time I've pulled up the pushrod its been wet. I think something bad must have got stuck to the roller/follower at some point..

Glasgow...that's nowt I'm off to Le Mans in a few weeks...touch wood it's always got me there on long trips...sometimes only just but.
