I was talking to my brother in law the other day and he was trying to explain about these blocks he had from a friend which acted as a lift for his landy.

Has any of you heard of such things?... He said he had some made 7" lift and the lad who makes them at his work place will only want £20 for them.

Does this sound right and how will they work? (We only spoke quickly about them)
 
I remember he said something about unbolting the shock... Bolt the block on then bolt the shock to the block?
 
i considered this idea on my landy for a while as well.

however on speaking to some friends they limit the amount of articulation you can do compared to a lift kit. which ultimately you want when off roading. if you don't go off roading really and its just something to make it look aesthetically pleasing then its a good cheap way. but i would suggest spending out on a lift kit 2" and then a 2" body lift but remember the body lift is raising your centre of gravity more which could make it easier to roll.
 
So you want advice on a home made lift kit ???

Just because the lad makes them at his work doesnt mean they arent a proper thing people can buy.

Like i said though, im trying to find out more about them
 
Never heard of 7" lift blocks!

Well, not unless you count the merkin mud-plugger abortions ..

If you want that much extra movement you need to spend on, or make, a shed-load more kit that will make it actually work and work safely.

I still wouldn't ..

There are lift blocks on sale commercially for up to about 3" lift, but again I wouldn't .. the suspension won't work unless you also add longer shock movement .. all you're doing with blocks is compressing the springs, thus potentially removing some axle movement. OK, they make it 'look' lifted, but anyone who knows Landrovers will likely just take the ****.

It's lifting done very cheaply for looks, not for use ... Take 'em offroad and you're more likely to break something without other work also being done.
 
No worries. They do work if you have, say, longer shocks and can't afford longer springs at the same time, for instance, but I'd always treat them as an interim bit of kit to be sold on ebay as soon as possible .. well, I wouldn't 'cos I wouldn't have 'em, but YKWIM .. ;)

Dont forget everything else you need to do
Wide angle props
Cranked arms
Adjustable panard
Extended break line
Extended bump stops
A frame ball joint
Big wheels and tyres as that must be the reason for the lift
Cos of the big tyres you will next need
HD half shafts
HD cv
Compressor
Locking diffs
Roll cage

Possibly ..

But not all at once .. ;)

Don't forget too, that whatever you lift the springs or body, you won't get anymore ground clearance, indeed, you can go too high and make it too top heavy, or not get through some green lanes without damage or a decent saw ..

The best reason for any lift is to accomodate larger tyres/wheels, which _will_ give you the best of both worlds, a bit of a lift but more importantly actual ground clearance!

It's dead easy to lift and make an abortion .. it's also easy, like you're doing, to research a little and get flummoxed by 'stuff' .. but at least then you'll get some idea of what to go to and can do it step-by-step.

All I have is slightly larger tyres, 2" springs and shock droppers and get reasonable articulation!

Yeh im not one to jump straight in buying this and that then realising ive wasted hard earned cash :rolleyes: i like to research stuff and get it right :)

Well my main reason for lift is like you said bigger tyres.... My local track has lots of places where i bottom out.

I can get a kit off my friend for £200 which he paid £370 for then i need to get tyres but its all money and i dont have much atm haha
 
Same here mate, I've been off-roading years without a proper lift, then this week managed to add a few things .. but even so it's only the most basic I'd do.

+2" springs and 2" shock droppers .. like these ..

They re-mount the poriginal shock mounts 2" lower so the shocks can articulate down more ... but you do need extra bump stops too .. like these .. bump stops

This is the minimum I'd do, and have done .. :)

Sorry to but in but could I use a pair of lift on the rear of my Discovery as the back end sits down after fitting my 2" lift kit?

Would fitting 90 Defender springs cause the rear to sag?
