can anyone tel me whether I can put the front output housing with a difflock from a discovery1(petrol) to discovery2(td5) without any mods?

afaik you cant do that

well you can but you wont have hole for hi/lo sensor and it would require center diff shimming up

do i need to have the hi/lo sensor pluged in?

not necessarily ,you could fit a seperate switch instead inside the cab to do the same job just extend the 2 wires to somewhere suitable
