I get real banging on axel twisters. Its on nearside when spring is fully compressed. Could it be a broken spring. Nothing is apparent from looking at it

could be many things. Rear a frame ball joint, radius arm bush. etc etc.

Need to try and re create the problem and get more information.

wahts happening is, as your spring relocates, there is a bit of an interferance fit into the spring seat so it takes some force to seat it full, so when it compresses it goes BANG as it slips fully into the spring seat thats what happens with mine anyway!

I thought that would be a bit obvious but if the OP hasnt heard that noise before then yes.

re locating spring is more of a metallic clang with an echo though.

i fought so, yam has been around for a while.

A frame ball joint, i would get some one to wobble the **** out of it while you look at it from underneath. Or jack up under the axle on one side and see if it has any sideways movement.

Basically try and re create the situation when you heard the noise the first time.

Unless anyone else has a better idea?

also reference a broken spring, i would have thought you could see a busted spring and it would collapse if it had snapped in the middle anyway.

Ok cheers ill have a look at ball joint first.maybe just under extremes its moving. Like you said i need to try and recreate when it happened.

Could be a missing bump stop? I lost one a few weeks back and it makes a heavy sounding bang when the axle hits the chassis!

Hey Farrar, yeah there should be, the standard ones look something like this,Defender Bump Stop Rubber - 2 Hole Mounting ANR4189 , but as you have a lift you may need extended one.

And if you ever want to check the balljoint, DiscoPol is right, use a pry bar between the ball joint mount and the A frame.

could be bump stop, yes. good call. but surely you would have mentioned if you'd just fitted a lift???

This knocking, clonking has only started since roll cage has been put on and only when off roading on articulation. Lift has been done a while and no problems cant find play in ball joint. Think i need to take it off road and when it bangs stop and look.

You havent got the correct bumpstops,(and one missing) to match your lengthened trailling arms so I would think you get through a prop or two where it over travels on compression and goes over length. It probably hits the rear roll cage supports where its going over length

Havent got any missing. Had a good look under there today. No movement in ball joint. Wheres the best place to buy the extended ones. Dont get any knocking on front.

You wont on front as radius arm dont articulate very much
