I need to replace the tyres on my '87 RRC but an exhaustive search of the forums has only thrown up comments/opinions regarding sizes & fitments. Fine if you're in to serious off-roading but what I'm really looking for is advice as to the products themselves - a 205/80 AT tyre that will perform in the snow but still give a reasonably quiet & smooth ride. My (original spec) Michelin XMS244's do all of this but despite still having an exellent tread are over 20yrs old & I feel should be replaced on safety grounds.

Aye, my tyres were 10 years old so I got a change. I just went for a generic all terrain - noise ain't too bad and I reckon it's a happy medium. They do tend to get clogged up in the snow. 205s are good for getting bite and are wide enough imho, but obviously not so great in sloppy mud or soft sand.

General Grabber ATs - superb all-rounders - quiet and competitively priced. There's a glut of good ATs these days Toyo Open Country, Cooper Discoverer AT/3, BFGs, Yokohama G012s to name a few.

If Michelins have lasted you for 20 yrs go for the same brand i bet there arnt many other brands that will last you that long

Michelins are very hard wearing. The modern equivalent, Michelin Latitudes don't have a particularly good reputation as an off road tyre, but they are a good road biased all season SUV tyre - but they cost - lots.

I bought a set of 5 NEXEN 235/70R16 104T

Fitted balanced and new valve , all done outside my house for £383.00

Seem to be a very good tyre for the money.. And very pleased with the work carried out.

They even wire brushed the alloy rim along the bead seat and applied sealant.

These tryes have been across Russia Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan China And Mongolia.
The pirellies I had wore out in 15000 miles and these are still going after 20000 and i am going back to Mongolia with them so are they so expensive?

The GG AT2s on my classic had done 25K miles at the point I sold it, they had far more tread left than your Latitudes which are about .5mm off the wear markers.

Had your classic done the off road work these Lattitudes have done?
I met some people in Mongolia that were having to change their GG and they had not done the mileage that these had and have you any photos?
These have been through the Gobi desert and also had to wade through rivers the only thing i havnt really tested them in is snow.
the other tyres I would consider doing what im doing are Coopers or Mickey Thomsons.

Latitudes are **** off road. But we're getting close to 40k on these on our fenders. I had hankook mts on me rrc that were ok for noise and mpg and all round grip. Didnt wear too bad either but didnt have em long enough to have high milage on em.

No they hadn't done a great deal of off road driving (occasional pay and play) but plenty of high speed motorway driving (the majority of my driving) which wears tyres heavily due to constant slip. I've never thought of taking photos of my tyres to be honest! I rotate them every service.

In fact I've only had the car since Aug '08, the previous (2nd) owner had it for 20yrs & fitted the Mich's in the early '90's. Strangely enough long-life is not an issue here as I only average 1500m a year & at my age doubt I'll keep the car for more than another 5yrs, unless of course a kind-hearted government bumps up the state pension

Decision made - set of General Grabber TR's supplied & fitted at my home for £366 all in. I'm happy with the write-up on the tyres themselves, a M&S with a tread pattern similar to the 244s's previously fitted. What was interesting was the diffference in casing weight with the Generals being so much lighter than the old tyres, but a reduction in un-sprung weight is no bad thing? As a footnote Michelin were impressed by the 22 yrs. of service (4+ in my ownership) & have sent me a selection of 'merchandise' including a folding multi-tool, a nice gesture I thought.
