Hi all,

Out of curiousity, when installing a new winch wire, should it run over the top of the drum, or underneath? It looks to me like if it goes over the top, it would be quite a sharp angle from the fairlead up to the drum.

Would the winch be stronger pulling from underneath?

Out of curiosity... which way round did you put it?? I did mine without really thinking of the pro's and cons of top or bottom.... ended up bottom and has worked fine for me... (I did take about 10 meters off the original length though...)

Thats exactly what i did... seems fine so far and have used it a quite a few times....

Usually from the bottom but this isn't 100% gospel. It can vary under certain circumstances. If the winch has a hole for the cable to be fed into, (such as superwinch huskys and commercial warns) the direction will be determined by this. If it is attached by a bolt then you may need to work it out by checking the direction of travel when wound in or out.

Wouldn't it be obvious from the position of the drum/fairlead? The cable should have a straight run onto the drum otherwise you are losing force.

I agree with steved. There is a video on youtube somewhere of a guy fitting a winch sicing n hooking the plasma rope and he explains how to do everything.

always run my wire at the bottom of the drum,if you go on top generally the rope will be at an angle and snag along the fairlead

Depends on the winch and is determined by the geartrain and how the brake works. get it wrong and it won't be safe or working properly .. check the winch instructions and research your particular winch so you get it right!
