Hi , I've done some searching and struggling for an answer. . 06 plate td4 with 81k. New clutch at 70k. Recently when cold I really struggle to change into 1st and 2nd. Plus all gears are not smooth and require effort. Problem goes after 10-15 mins of driving and it's as good as new.

Could it be something as simple as needing gearbox oil top up/change?

I see a lot of issues where the gearbox is fine on cold start but then gets stiff but I have the opposite? Any help appreciated?

Seeing as how the g-box only takes 1.6 litres and is so easy to do - this is a no-brainer.

This would be the cheapest fix - change the oil asap before trying anything else.

I agree, sounds like not enough oil in the box and is stiff untill it gets up to temp!!.

Yep, replaced the oil in my 06 freelander with 60000K a few weeks ago with the same problem. Just make sure you can undo the fill/level plug before you drain the oil out. It's like a new gearbox now with easy gear selection.

As a temp fix I have sprayed the gear linkage with penetrating oil and it's seems to have loosens it up somewhat . Ill try changing the oil soon just don't fancy lying on the snow just yet. Has anyone got a guide for the 06 td4 ? I have seen the rave manuals go upto 03?
