Last night whilst driving along a Tarmac road (high range no diff lock) I lost all drive, I had backed off the power and was coasting when I reapplied the throttle I had no drive, I pulled over took it out of high range and put it back in which restored drive, ( it has a 2" body lift so figured it had knocked itself out of high range) carried on driving for approx 10 miles up and down the gears, left the car for an hour or so got 100m up the road and lost all drive again.
This time round it didn't want to drive seemed to engage high and low range but had no drive and a horrible grinding noise, eventually got it to drive and got approx 5 miles lost drive again and couldn't get anything to work so towed it home.
Today I have,
checked all the linkages, all look ok
Drained the oil from the transfer box, slightly dirty but ok
Removed the high/low selector, all ok grub screw is still tight.
Removed the rear cover (next to handbrake), all looks ok in there, but if I select a gear with the engine running and lift the clutch it doesn't turn, should that turn or is it a pto drive?
Anyone got any ideas on a cause or other checks I can make, can't get one of the bolts off the rectangular cover with the tools I have at home so haven't checked in there.
