Hi i have a 00 range rover 2.5dse . I put it back on the road lately it had been parked a while .
Symptoms are heavy steering altenator light keeps coming up and the other day after I turned it off the engine got very smokey and now its all covered in this fine reddish powder .
Fan belt was changed not to long ago as was the rad and lately I changed the power steering pump which fixed nothing and the tensioner for the belt . After I changed the tensioner it worked fine for 100 or so miles but now its worse then ever and on the front drivers side of the engine there is a rattling that sounds like a bag of spanners . Anyone have any suggestions ? any at all would be appritiated thanks

Knackered alternator?
Maybe, Im going to take it out again and get it refurbished Im also going to change the tensioner and fan belt again . Its kinda a funny one though its like the belt is slipping but it isint just the power steering pump and altenator that arent getting pumped enough

Check idler pulley and the alternator. Make sure everything the belt drives is free with no notchyness.

Is it not a separate belt for the aircon compressor?

Yes aircon belt is separate. But if there is anything wrong with aircon compressor or adjustment bearing seize wise you would usually lose the belt PDQ. :)
