The thing is I really am not keen on the p38 but so far the l322s I have seen seem like overpriced tat! I'm leaning twards a certain volvo 4+4 lol someone change my mind haha

those multitronic (automatic) xc90s are prone to gearbox failure as well!
If the gearbox hasn't been done in an l322 td6 then budget for one like I did when negotiating a price.
The l322 is an evolution of the p38, so many would (and wouldn't) agree that it is inheritably better, albeit more expensive.
I love my td6 l322, the ride is sublime and the interior is top notch.
If you want reliability and build quality go buy a Lexus!

Lexus! No thanks lol yes I've read up on the volvos but for the same price as I high mile older l322 you can get a low miles much newer volvo but like the missus sed wot will I say wen ppl ask wot car we have a volvo! Lol

I think it's like any other 'older' model of a car, you will find good and bad. Some people look after their vehs , others do not. I (and a car sourcer) searched for almost a year to get the right car at the right price. Lovely outside, not a scratch, lovely inside. Only thing I had to do was buy some leather paint for the driver's door arm rest.
So the question is probably more one of how much time do you have to spend looking for a well loved vehicle. If you can afford to get a car sourcer on the job, you'll probably get a better looked after one, as they have all the contacts for trade ins.

the l322 is a stately home on wheels, the xc90 is a family wagon on stilts- not really in the same boat really!
You need to work out what you need from your car first, e.g. will it be a practical run around for a young family, or a weekend plaything for a middle aged couple?

It's all down to personal opinion, I agree the D1 & 2 are ugly but I find the big arsed L322 just as ugly

We haven't got kids but have a large Labrador and spend a lot of our time up in the Yorkshire dales out walking with our dog, it will be my everyday car tho aswell but my commute is only 6 mile round trip, thort a range rover wud be a nice place to be wafting round the dales

I don't recommend rangies as daily drivers unless you have a second car always available! :0
When the lab gets old and his back legs give in (as they all do), it will be a long way to lift him! My advice is... go with your heart, just make sure that you are handy with a spanner, and have a couple of k in the bank for potential repairs.
