Not a silly question at all.

The tick-over speed is controlled by the ECU and is the same irrespective of whether the engine is warm, hot or cold.

The correct speed is 780 rpm + or - 30.

So your's is too high by 40rpm.

Whether this is something to worry about I don't know - but someone will be along soon to tell us whether to worry or not - or even to set it alight.

What happens with mine is that when I switch on headlights or heated screen, the voltage drops for a second and the revs go up a tiny amount and then it falls back to the normal idle speed.

I'm sure that these are tiny differences and are perfectly normal.

The OPs idle speed is outwith the 'normal' range though. Plus he was asking about warm,or cold etc.

The reason (in my ignorance) I specified 'warm' tick-over, is because, like has been confirmed, things like the HRW or the seat heaters, the fan motor etc etc does make the tick-over vary on the first few moments.

But once all that's happened and it's steadied down, then it seems to stabilise at what looks like 850rpm....

Never had or heard of this problem. It might be worth checking the throttle potentiometer voltages and check if it's all returning correctly.

Have you got your aircon on ?

Aircon tends to cause the biggest rise in idle rpm out of all the accessories.

No, not at start up.

I run it ocassionally (as recommended) but usually later in the journey when I've done a few miles.... having it re-gassed soon too!

don't forget that when you've got the air directed to the screen (de-mist) and the fan on speed 4 the aircon comes on automatically to assist with the demisting....

cb40 - how do you know its running at 850? off the rev counter or have you had it connected to some diags kit?

After a service it seemed to sort itself out, perhaps I've got a good mechanic, LOL
