engine drives fine till about 2500_3000 revs then coughs and sputters any ideas

When was the last time ya changed yer fuel filter? Other than that, lift pump, air in fuel line, blocked pick-up or some wizz-bang bit of lecky wizardry having a hissy fit.

check for oil in the red plug on the ecu

thanks johnlad,,,,,not really mechanical (joiner) but willing to get stuck in is this something thats fairly easily sorted or am i looking at another hefty bill ?

Is the fuel pump noisy? If so may be a clogged pump filter or the pump is on its way out.
No lift pump on a TD5.

it is pretty easy, if its a defender the ecu is under drivers seat, on a disco its under the bonnet somewhere i believe, if oil present change loom using guide below
