So this week am going for a full fluid change on the autobox using the gibson method. Going with info on the ashcroft web page a recon box should be filled with 7.5 l of oil. Can anyone confirm this ?

I'v used that and other methods on other auto boxes. However when I changed the engine in my Freelander I just refilled the auto with fluid just to be safe. I plan to drain and refill it again in the spring.

Well the stated capacity of the box from dry is 8.5 litres.

If you read my post on changing the fluid - you'll see I bought 5 litres and used a little over 4.6 litres to refill.

Obviously your method will get more out - but how much - I have no idea.

Cheers mate thinking i might need to put it off untill next week due to this cold spell couldnt even get into it today till i run some hot water down the doors. And no they didnt fall off i will keep everyone posted and take photos of how i done it

Ok guys so after losts of reading up about the gibson method i decided not to go down that road and do a full flush the reason being is i wasn't wanting to take the chance and over clean the box in one go and mabe cause problems for the valve block so first change done am going to do another one in the next couple of days. This is colour of the fluid that came out. Any input on this does this look normal or should i be concerned

I imagine that the fluid that came out was a shade or two darker than what you put in?

Did it smell of burnt toast at all?

I hope not.

I did hear someone describe it as 'toasted almonds'

It just smelt like very used oil tbh mate. Seems to be smother when changing but i will need to wait till the second change to see if it helps my lock up problem. Another thing only 3l came out ? But 4.5 went back in to level ? Low on fluid ?

Low on fluid could well be right and the cause of the lock up problem.

Likely the last person to change the fluid didn't follow the correct level check procedure / temperature.

Possibly it was the original fluid from the factory?

its doesnt look like its ever been changed but who knows. lock up in 4th seems better but 5th is still the same when its changes from 4th to 5th its like it slips and i have to back off the power a wee bit for it to lock up then its fine am just hopping that another fluid change sorts it out because the more i read the mor worrying it gets

Give it a couple of weeks before you do the next change, to see if it improves further.

When I changed mine to see if it fixed the hesitation / judder/ when changing from 5th to 4th it was immediately an improvement, but it got gradually better over the next 500 miles or so. All problem gone now.

I'm now planning on changing the fluid at shorter intervals than the 60K in the service schedule.

i think you could be on to something there mate i will leave the other change for a couple of hundred miles and see how she goes

My old fluid came smell free but black. The car had only done 31k. I drained the fluid as I was swapping the engine. When I refilled the box I put in 4.5 litres of ATF-U but I do plan to change it again in the spring. I don't notice any lock up in 4th but I do in 5th. It locks up at 48mph but doesn't unlock until 40 mph on the flat. My box changes smooth as silk when it's hot but is a but jumpy when cold?
