Hi everyone I've always liked the looks of the discovery and freeloader but was always put off by running costs. After speaking to a mechanic in my local garage who has owned both freelanders and discoverys he re assured me that they are not that expensive to run. I'm pulled a little towards the freelander as the 2.0D would I think be more economical and cheaper to tax and insure not 100% if that correct. My question would be what would you recommend a freelander or discovery an why? I'm hoping to spend around £1500-2500 and would like a decent 4x4.

Thanks

Hello.

If you are spending that then the tax will be about the same. I prefer RRC's over either but that's just personal choice.

Disco's are prone to tin worm (rust)
Freelanders are good but are mainly BMW bits so can be expensive when they go wrong.

That is about all I know from experience, search the threads on hear, look at some of the build threads for disco's if for nothing else will let you know what to look for when buying. Disco's and RRC's are built on the same chassis and similar frames so normally go in the same places, the link bellow is the rebuild thread for mine have a look, I am still finding rot :(

Good luck, hope you find a good one and welcome to the world of Landy :D

Ive got a Disco and a Freelander and ive always found the bus is more reliable :D

Welcome to the forum, you need to drive both and decide which suits your needs better, both good aslong as they are looked after, if not they will be a moneypit

Disco. Buy a decent one though. Take someone that knows what they are looking at/for.

freelanders are ok... But they are basically a rover with a cleaver 4 wheel drive system.

I've owned a defe, a disco and a freelander (for a short time) and would have the disco over all for everyday capabilities. And the defe for off road capabilities and looks!

Either way just make sure you know what you are buying or take someone that does. Do the research and search on here for common faults! This will save you buying a nail!

Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone, I've had a look and the insurance for a discovery and freelander isn't a massive difference so may go for a discovery as they are more suited for everyday use by what I can see from reviews. Is there any particular engine size or model I should avoid?

Go for a Disco with a 300 TDi engine and a manual gearbox but do have a good look at the rear crossmember of the chassis and the rear floor area of the body and the front cross member as well. Take someone with you who knows landys and avoid something that has been used for off roading. I had a Range Rover classic manual with a 200 TDi for over 8 years and it never let me down and an early disco is virtually the same vehicle.:welcome:

Oh I forgot to mention that you'll need to check the sills and chassis outriggers where they support the body as they rot there as well. I wish I had bought a good disco 300tdi instead of my current P38A, this things costing me a fortune.
