I saw an odd Landy at the local petrol station earlier.

It was cream/beige coloured SWB with a 1991-2 J reg plate (eg. J123 ABC)

The rear lights were Defender style and position.

The front wings, and bonnet were Series 3.

It was on leaf-spring suspension.

It had a tropical roof panel fitted.

Everything about it said "Series 3" apart from the rear lights and the reg plate.

What was it?

I am fairly sure it had a Land Rover oval badge on the back.

I edited the first post as I had put grille as well as front wings, but I didn't actually get a front view.

I was going to ask the bloke about it but I was in a queue and he had gone before I could.

Ex military can have later plates than they should if the owner hasn't applied for age related plates I think. Also, very late series land rovers had 90/Defender rear light placement.

I had a 1983 Series 3 with "Defender style" rear lights, had purple tinted windows as well!

Late S3's from 1982 onwards had those defender rear light positions. Can't think why it would be on a more recent plate though.

I was thinking about imports, or ex military, but surely they wouldn't have a reg that made them look newer than they were? As far as I know, you can't buy a "cherished" registration that does that?

you're right you can't put a plate on a car that makes it appear newer than it is, oh well we'll never know unless the op sees it again and manages to snap some pics of it.

thought it was standard for ex military landys to be given civvy reg when demobbed

Doesn't indicate age just date of 1st registration
