hello! ive just replaced the heater matrix in my 2003 freelander 1.8 petrol,its got fitted the new style thermostat fitted,the car runs fine with no over heating issues but the bottom radiator pipe stays cold,any ideas if the thermostat is ****ed ?

It will take ages to get that hot at this time of year! The rads are huge and cool very well. The new stat design is to overcome the volume of cold water shocking the engine cos it blends a bit of hot with the cold returning so the engine doesn't suffer from thermal shock. This means the bottom hose will take even longer to get hot.
 
make sure you bleed the system correctly and thoroughly too.

it's a pain to do but will stop any subsequent issues from developing.
