erm no.................... thats how my alternator is wired up and its the same as the one i took off my old engine - both 300tdi defenders

Haynes manual 5.4 (engine electrical systems) section 6 - 300tdi engines 6.14 disconnect the wiring from the back of the alternator (see illustration) 3 wires arrowed ;)

well some ones done something odd as it shouldnt be d+ ignition battery light is the exciter wire that and b+ large wire to starter/battery is all it should have unless you fit the w terminal to a rev counter ,but without nothing ,car and dash are fed by a brown wire to ignition switch where a white wire takes off all ignition feed and white /orange takes off auxillary feed

Strange.................. my rev counter is on the same post as the brown/yellow wire and it does work :) so what should i do about the white wire with the female connector then??

Your both right

James is describing wiring for 1991 - 94

Daz is describing wiring for models 1986 - 91

erm I think

I've looked into this a bit further and some alternators have a "S" terminal which is for battery sensing which would account for the 12v feed via the whire wire with female terminal :)

Pic of pic :)

So why the 3 connections in the pic then?
Is it because the wiring diagram incorporates the diode and resistor as in the wiring diagram???

Now i am confused, mine has got big brown wire, brown and yellow wire both on bolted terminals, then a white wire with a female terminal, all were conected that way, havent removed any to get them wrong and all worked fine before i used the alternator to turn engine over, hasnt got a rev counter either, has got raptor dash tho with a volt/charging gauge.
