Hi dont know if any one can help me? My mechanical knowedge is Legolike if you know what I mean. I have a 1996 disco M1 2.5 TDI and I cant find a thermostst on E bay is it positioned on the right hand side of the engine which looks like a sensor pluged into the top? If it is how does it come out so I can see what I am trying to buy? All the thermostats I bring up on E bay looks similer but when I input my car details and it says its not compatible although it states it a 1995 to 98 ??? Vey confusing for a peanut head like me! Please help!! By the way I have no reading on the temp guage and the heating is just about working a little,,could this mean I have a punture?

Not a job to tackle on your own if you don't know what your looking for -

take it to a little independent garage and ask if you can watch him do it -
be upfront and tell him why - he can only say no ...

to do it yourself if your not sure - could feck your engine - lack of coolant is a bad thing in a Landy ...

thermostat is behind the aliminum housing that top hose fastens to ,temp sender is there too ,to ensure system is full of coolant you need to remove the plastic bung on top of thermostat housing and the one on the rad and fill till they overflow replacing as they do ,the level in expansion tank isnt necessarily level in engine ,low level will make heater in the cab poor ,plastic bungs are better replaced with brass ones ,you have a 300tdi engine just buy a thermostat for that

Cheers James Martin you have been much help! I have had a company car for the last 20 yrs so I didn't even need to check the oil! Do want to learn the basics! Cheers again!

I think the basics for you is to get yourself a manwell and study it well. ;)

haynes manual is the first thing anybody should get after getting a new car, if only for the wiring diagrams and the torque figures. either halfrauds, fleabay or amazon.
for someone who dont know a thermostat from a differential they are essential.
somehow an oil stained paper book is just easier than a manual on a screen.
