Hi, I'm John Smith.
My parents didn't have much imagination. That aside, I've had problems with my 1999 Discovery not starting. Couldn't find the same symptoms under "Discovery" or "TD5" topics.
This is a brief account, in case it helps someone else.
Turn key, lights come on, starter doesn't turn over, M and S lights come on. I locked it and left it overnight but next morning it wouldn't unlock let alone start! Tried manually unlocking and opening the door and, of course, the alarm went off. Turned it off and tried to start the car - started immediately.
4X4 agent couldn't explain why the alarm / immobiliser system confused itself but setting off the alarm seems to force it to re-configure itself. Problem had nothing to do with fob battery, car battery, oil in wiring (which has caused many problems) or starter motor.
