Defender 200 tdi 1990

Have had to replace the original starter motor. The orginal had a little bracket on the back with a connector for the earth strap to the block.

The new one does not have any connector or mean to. It is the same as this one on fleabay:

I have connected the earth to one of the two bolts which hold the starter together at the back. But I suspect this may not be satisfactory. Is there an alternative way of connecting?? (And why does it not earth via all the bolts holding it on anyway??)

it goes on one of those nuts at the top of it. i think the top one but i don't have a tdi anymore so i cant check which one but it is one of them

Surely not? The live feed goes to the top one of the solenoid. I mean the earth

i changed one last year on a disco 300tdi and the earth went to one of those i just don't remember which one

I changed a starter motor on a 300tdi a couple of years ago, and as far as I remember, there was no earth strap. The starter was earthed by being bolted directly to the engine.

thought it was earthed thru the block

where does your earth attach to? mine is chassis to block, chassis to battery

The earth from starter motor goes to block; there is one from block to chassis (thin one), then the battery earth goes onto the gear box.

I think I may do one from one of the main starter motoe fixing bolts to the battery?

mine doesn't have one from the block to starter and works just fine

I see no need to put one direct to the battery

I have 200tdi and it does have a small earth from the block to one of the long starter bolts (10mm head i think) that goes right through the housing. It doesn't matter which one you bolt it too. The more earths the better i run one from starter to block, block to chassis and main battery earth via gearbox to chassis,

starter doesnt need a seperate earth ,it is earthed pretty well just by been bolted to engine ,just ensure engine ,chassis and body are

I second what James says, as long as there is a good earth to the engine/gearbox you will be fine.

Captain Skellon is trying to make things a bit exciting I think, like red hot cables and smoke and maybe flames...
