I have a 1999 genuine Overfinch P38 4.6 with BRC Sequent 56 multipoint lpg system. It has recently developed an intermittent engine cutting out problem while running on LPG. It seems to be when I hit a pothole or a very uneven piece of road at low revs the engine sometimes cuts out. The engine is warm when this happens and always restarts fine. Any ideas where I should start? Is it likely to be an electrical problem? Thanks for any suggestions.

Ps. The LPG system was serviced less than 1000 miles ago (both filters renewed and system tuned)

I have a P 38 R reg 2.5 D and my engine cuts out and some times the revs drop and then go back to normal , but all this happens when the car is worm any ideas plz as i have tried the fuel relay and changed the fuel filter too and still the same . Any advise would be great,

It's normal to introduce yourself and not steal someone else's thread.

Need the get the codes read, could be crank sensor, needle lift sensor, fuse box and a number of other things.

Possible Idle Control Valve (this thing is like the choke of old...)

Thanks for the replies. It has run fine for weeks but has started to misbehave again.

Definitely hitting a pothole/rutting causes the problem but very intermittent.

I previously had a P38 with a bad crank sensor...when engine cut out I got GEARBOX FAULT warning message, don't get this with this vehicle.

If it is a bad crank sensor would hitting a pothole/rutting highlight the problem?

Could it be a bad connection within the LPG system?

Is an auto electrician my best option?

If it only happens on LPG - doubtful it is the crank sensor and more like a dodgy connection in the LPG system...

My first port of call would be the Gas supply solenoid valve and/or relay!

I previously had a situation where the empty LPG tank warning buzzer was sounding intermittently even when the tank was full....this has not sounded again for over four months?

Is replacing the solenoid a DIY job?

Quite possible....

If the wiring to the solenoid is lose/broken as you hit the pothole/rut electrical power is shutoff from the solenoid and the gas valve closes starving the engine of fuel...as it is an uncommanded closure i.e. not from the Gas ECU, it hasn't handed control back to the Petrol ECU and thus the engine dies.

Or if it is the solenoid control relay, the same thing will happen....

Does it restart straight away once it has died or do you have to wait any length of time??

I forgot to mention that the relay was replaced a couple of months ago.

The engine always re-starts immediately, but sometimes when it switches back over to LPG it dies again but this not always the case.

What you state makes a lot of sense, I'll get the solenoid wiring checked.

Had system checked by BRC installer today. Turned out to be a bad (loose) earth connection. Tightened and both solenoids replaced for £50. Happy with that
