Hi,

I was thinking about buying a 'classic' Land Rover - Reason is that where I live is pretty isolated and the old Mercedes I usually drive just cannot take another winter like the last one.

I'm used to the general mayhem of older cars. I've owned many a classic. I want one now that I can used from Nov to March should the weather be bad. The lane to here is pretty poorly surfaced and I had to leave the current car by the road and the other is garaged mostly. I was going to sell it and buy an old LR.

Question is - which one, and from where. I simply don't have the knowledge to make a decision and was hoping from some help here.

All advice greatly appreciated.

Everyone will have their own opinion as to which is the best

Mostly it will come down to which one suits you the best.
Do a search for what to look for,
Write down a list of all the things to look for,
Then take someone else with you. Never ever ever go on your own to view a vehicle, you will get distracted and you will probably buy with your heart not your head

if you really only want a car for basically road/lane use a diesel discovery is yer best bet.
the classic series landrovers and the defenders are literally a tin box on wheels with no creature comforts.

Rubbish! My series has got a big cushion in the back fer the dog.......wots that if it int creature comforts.....

If you really only want a car for basically offroad/lane use, a classic diesel series or defender is yer best bet.
Discovery's are literally a rust box on wheels.

If its occasional use then Disco all the way, I miss the comfort of mine, big comfy seats, electric everything, soundproofing, heaters, oh my god how I miss my heaters!!

If you will be getting a bit more into the off roading and the "scene" then a defender, its a pain to live with but if your use to classics its just the same as the 60's/70's cars, basic, cold, bumpy, unreliable and noisey but will put a massive smile on your face...

to be honest if your not handy with the spanners then you might be better off with a japenese 4x4.

Very true, we used a mk2 pajero for years at work, a mate is now using it as a laner, it hasn't had any issues for years, just keeps going...

Series is what you need, all the rest are pretenders and wannbe's...and the owners are in fact extremely jealous of our Series REAL Land Rovers, but refuse to admit it.....

Oddly, I think I do want an old, uncomfortable, expensive tin box that will break down a lot... I'd like a heater though.

I've had some idiotic cars over the years. I once tried to drive from London to Edinburgh, midwinter in a knackered 1979 Fiat 128 3p. No working heater, and by the time I got there, no wipers, no wing mirrors, no brakes and no coolant. Honestly! - I don't mind it going wrong.

I know I should buy a landcruiser (or just put winter tyres on the Merc) but I've always wanted an old Land Rover - just do...

I guess a SWB petrol would be fine. Where to get such a thing? And which year is best? Also, and this is shallow - how easy are they to re-paint?

I would go for an early range rover from the 70's as it has a heater. dont worry they still rust and go wrong nearly as much as a series

very carefully and with big pockets if you want one in good original condition...

a mate just sold a ****ter 2door with no interior, no mot and a fair chunk of corrosion for 730-750quid, it's saving graces were a good running engine, solid gearbox and a quiet overdrive

Sorry, just got back from a week away.

right well if you want to pay no road tax you will need a 70-72 model, these have become collecable over the last year and the rpices have gone up. the 73 to 85 models get cheaper as they get newer but you have to pay the road tax which sometimes can work out cheaper than megabucks for an early car.

keep an eye on ebay and give us a shout when one comes up you like the look of and we can tell you what need checking.

also whats your budget if you have not already said?
