Scratchy's wiring is in a reet mess - various brake llights, indicators and now full beam not working. Bits of erroneous wire and scotch locks all over the place.

I want to start planning sorting it out well in advance of the MOT in September.

I've been thinking along the lines of getting a second hand one like this. Stripping it right back, removing every thing I don't want, adding a few extras - i.e. fag lighter by the tailgate for camping trips, rear work light, etc. I'd also like to fit a blade fuse box to replace the silly glass ones that are in there now. Is that a good idea or am I being a bit 'daft'?

Alternatively I could make new one from scratch, but is there anywhere I can get a kit with all the correct lengths of wire and connectors?

when i get round to it im feeding 7 core wire to the rear of mine. i dont need all the wires or light so will have some aux feeds for other stuff. im gunnar use the large white wire as a aux feed.

That a good idea and will keep the costs down a lot.
Make a plan of all the things you will want to add (or remove). put in a couple of extra power socket inside. Think about a winch, CB, etc and other bits.
Get a Disco fuse box for the better fuses n relays.

Sit down and work out what the cabling has to do and lengths.
Then let me know what you want, and I will see what I can do for you.

Its a bodge, You dont know the rating you require, the colours arent correct and you risk a fire .

not after a argument dude, I wire truck trailers up with 7 core and there 24vot and run **** loads of lights. i could work out curent flow and amp rates if i put my thinking head on but theres no need 7 core is man enough. im just saying wot im doing , your idear is fine to

yes its a fecking nightmare when some one fecks with wireing so you cant follow it. If you are going to take out you loom to fit another why not repair yours and re fit.
When i got mine it had house hold cabe, speeker wire and all that ****, seem ike every yhing was running ff the cig lighter.
wiering is rewarding when you get into it and do it yourself,

Agree with this 100%! The loadings are very important even on old crap like land rovers.

As for the OP, I would just repair your loom, it is a simple set up and a bit of time can go a long way. If you don't have multiple colours then code the wires with pai t, red 1 mark, red 2 mark and so on.

As for extras, I personally run all my extras on a completely different circuit direct from the battery, for example my entire raptor dash is powered by 1 70amp cable that is maxi fused at 30 constant and 60 blow rating at the battery, this goes into a distribution fuse block and spreads out to each device. I also use relays for all switching e.t.c. this means that I can run earth wires for switching instead of running the entire live circuit via the dash and start risking shorts.

All wiring is traceable if done correctly. Trailer wire is fine for running lights but if people want to add 12v sockets, work lights and other stuff then you start dealing with 30+ amps, too much for a 7 core strand to deal with really. It's perfectly fine if it's you who wired it up and know about it but when others down the line start to add in they can start to overload, with 7 core its easy to get a dangerous short across multiple circuits

listen to mhm he knows his wireing and helped me out no end with the issues i had with my disco wireing.

if u dont use correct colours etc you may think its fine untill 3 months later you have to come back to it and youve forgot where all the same colour cables went.

just get mhm to sort you out a loom
